Depreciation
Just wondering how much this car will depreciate further after the upcoming facelift/new model. I have a 2018 model and know that we all have taken a depreciation hit once we walked out the dealership door. This is my first AMG model and have heard that these models depreciate quickly. (I got a quotation of 85k from CarMax). I am asking because if it takes a precipitous hit than I may trade it in for another car. (I realize cars are a never ending money pit, however I just want to lose less money).

Just wondering what car you could have bought new (other than maybe a 911 and Tacoma) would have not taken a similar hit? You can't own a car like this and worry about those numbers.... but if it had been a wagon maybe you'd be a shade better

Luckily, demand for the W213 is way hotter than the W212 was, a by-product of the leaps and bounds that were made between the two. (Anecdotally, I always liked the idea of the W212 AMG E wagon but it basically being a rolling time capsule of already well-worn 2010 Mercedes tech in a car that felt like it wasn't fully able to cope with what was being asked of it kept me away...the drivetrain felt too fast for the car). As a result, depreciation especially for wagons is much better than it was last-gen at this point. For example, I don't see an '18 E63 wagon for less than $100k, no matter the mileage. By contrast, a local Mercedes had a year old W212 with CCBs, LOADED that stickered for close to $130k about 4 years ago and they couldn't move it for $82k after a year and 10k miles. Ended up taking somewhere in the 70s after sitting on the lot for 6 months. TL;DR the W213 is in a different league than the 212 (the chassis finally feels like it keeps up with the drivetrain, feels like old M cars used to) and you can't really compare depreciation curves of the two.
I personally think the facelift won't move the needle meaningfully in either direction. The only reason it did with the 212 was because they added 4matic which quadrupled sales on its own.

These toys will depreciate a ton however you look at it. Best way to curb that is taking in a gently used CPO but you have to be patient till you find the right one. Finding a wagon is even harder.
Like others said if you keep it longer it’s less of an issue. I don’t think they’ll be depreciating extraordinarily however, like for example Audi S6/7s and RS7s, took a tremendous bath with the new model coming out the manufacturer is discounting brand new leftovers $15k plus whatever you can negotiate the dealer. So imagine trying to get out of a 1 or 2 year old one even with super low miles. I went through this getting out of my ‘17 S7.
MB is doing this for their AMG GT and GTC roadsters I guess so you can imagine if you owned one and wanna get out of it you’d take huge bath.
It’s all about what the market looks like and what the manufacturer is doing that indirectly screws the used car value. My ‘17 GLE63s was CPO with 13k miles and we got it for around $40k below what it had stickered for. This wasn’t an option for my ‘19 E63s wagon and I bit the bullet and bought new. It’s never an investment, and always a question of loss mitigation. Unless you’re buying a limited edition Ferrari or GT Porsche.

Really... drive it like you stole it. Or not. I took really good care of my '14 AMG wagon and got a decent premium over KBB. But for the money I "saved" vs selling a beater, I did miss out on using it as a daily driver, or for some of our road trips. You live once, so enjoy the trip.

But like everyone said, new cars are rarely investments unless you're going into limited models above $250k and even then...

While I disagree with the first part somewhat (take care of it, watch the break in period) I totally agree with the second part. Enjoy the car and if you are too worried about resale or depreciation then you might not should be in this type of car (think Tundra or Tacoma and hold for 1-1.5yrs).
But then you have an Alfa and an R8 in your collection. I don’t think I’d worry about the AMG.
