Arabian Grey E63S

I was thinking more about what you'd pay to take your vehicle to a high end shop and get a full paint job, comparable in quality to factory paint.

thats a completely different animal--- Id just wrap the car at that point... but oem paint is done on bare bone frames with nothing installed and done in more than a situational basis like a high shop has to deal with. The labor to remove, prep, paint, reinstall, is just not there when the car is at the factory. MBZ just thinks Arabian is 8k better than standard colors- I do not.

Agreed. Worth $10k, no way. Solarbeam is a hard sell on top of it.

I've had it claimed to me that paint to match type custom colors - again, one-off type choices rather than "choose from 5" - have the vehicles pulled completely off the line for painting, usually off site. I get that it's still not the kind of labor you're citing, but if true it's not "nothing" and depending on where they have to take it, etc. it doesn't seem like that big of a premium IMO.
Custom paint to me means actual custom colors (wether it's a competitor paint or chip match). I can see that process costing more.

That is nonsense. They are still painted on the same line in the same booths under the same conditions. Paint needs to be prepped and the color substituted for a stock color then reversed after the car in question passes the station. Prep for the guns also involves cleaning both before and after. The time involved in this is largely reflective of the added cost.

Also this video gives a good idea of how the paint process in a luxury car factory works.

This isn't true. It is done on the line. Only true custom stuff like personalized embroidery or flame finish paint is done off the line. This kind of paint and leather can be done on the line.

Yep its all line, heck even Ferrari with its myriad of custom paints is done on the line and as an buyer of an ordered car- he or she can see the process of their exact car.

so gorgeous. Arabian Grey actually goes back a long way in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. it was fairly common in the 60s & 70s on the 280SE and the Pagoda.

Thanks for digging up the pic.
Maybe that’s a wrap? It seems odd there would be a color wrapped wagon provided by AMG at the academy...but then I look at the wheel color and that looks aftermarket as well, but who knows!

I had the schedule A service performed on my wagon this morning and saw the Arabian Grey sedan in the showroom (Laguna Niguel MB). It really looks good and the red interior is not nearly as blinding as I thought it might be. Anyway, the MSRP is $159895.00 (as VIC55 showed) but on top of this window sticker is another: Manufaktur color $30,000 with the dealer asking price of $189,895.00. As I mentioned it's nice but not that nice!

FYI, its a customers car AMG driving academy does not provide wagons

i just contacted the dealer. it's listed at $159,895.00 – that's what they're selling it for. i think you may have misread the sticker and conflated the interior & exterior designo manufaktur color cost on top of the actual asking price.

If you look at the third photo on the link you provided you will see the window sticker and above that a smaller sticker. This smaller one is where I found this info. It says 'Manufaktur color combination $30,000 and under "dealer installed options subtotal" a "dealer asking price (not the manufacturer's suggested retail price) which is $189,895.00. At the bottom of this sticker is this: "This addendum has been added by the dealer, not the manufacturer, to reflect any additional charges for items added or services performed. This is not an authorized factory sticker." The bold is per the sticker. I'm just reporting what I saw so maybe the dealership decided that this is too much to ask?

so interesting... hopefully they came to their senses then. or they’re not aligned internally, i.e. the person i was chatting was only looking at the the stock number and associated listing, like all of us.
either way, $160K is a stretch per the above discussion, but $190K is absolutely ****ing outrageous.

Is that interior coming with special eye glasses so you don't have blod PTSD from that much red? Like Cosmo Kramer will have said :" Is too much, It's too much, Jerry"
