E53 Locking Differential?

I just bought a 2019 E53. The AMG supplement to the owner's manual says "After a breaking-in period of 2000 miles (3000 km) the oil on the locking differential should be changed in a qualified specialist workshop. This oil change prolongs the service life of the locking differential."

My question is - do I have a locking differential? The manual doesn't specify which AMG models for which they're recommending the oil change. If it does apply to the E53, I would hope that the prepaid maintenance package would cover it because I bought that package. But whether it does or not, I want to do the recommended thing for my new car.

locking differential oil should be changed??

The AMG SLC43 owner's manual says almost the exact same thing, but only necessary if you have a the "AMG Performance Pack" option with the AMG rear axle limited-slip differential lock.
If you call a good M-B authorized service center, hopefully they should be able to determine if your car has the type of differential that requires the oil change.

The 53 does not

The E53 does not need differential fluid changeat 2kmi. Dealer verified it. Also if you open the service guide (search forums), you''ll see it.
I did not perform on mine.

Took mine in for the 2k diff service but all they did was inspect it. No change.

I Was Just Told Yes

I just asked my sales guy, who checked into it for me. He says that the 2K differential oil change is required. Says they checked via my VIN number. This dealership is designated an AMG Performance Center, if that carries any weight.

Here's Maintenance Schedule

Something I found googling - a maintenance schedule for 2019 AMG E53 that's published by a Mercedes dealer in Ontario, Canada. It denominates everything in kilometers, and shows "replace rear axle fluid" at 3000 km.

Never Mind! It Does NOT Need It

As Roseann Rosanadana used to say, never mind! My sales guy just called me and said that their service people checked far up the chain and the answer is that the E53 does not have a locking differential and does not require the 2K oil change. As for that Canadian maintenance sheet (my last post) saying otherwise, I can't explain that.

This has been covered already, please see at

There is no need to go up the chain to the CEO level to find the answer.
Very simple: take a look at your windshield sticker and answer is right there. Below is the windshield sticker example from E63s that needs oil change.

Thanks very much for the pic and the link. I remember taking such a sticker off the windshield of my 2019 E53 but I tossed it, having seen breaking in instructions in the owners manual. It could have had the "additional oil change" wording but I don't remember seeing it. I've asked my salesman what the E53's on their lot show. It's very possible that the oil change is only supposed to apply to E63's but it would have been easy to say that in the owners manual, as it distinguishes between E53's and E63's all the way through. Very confusing.

I asked my dealer here in Houston and their service people said it was not necessary.

My salesman sent me the attached pic of the windshield sticker for a CLS53. No mention of a differential oil change. I think this finally ends the controversy.

No kickdown? Sh**!! I have been religiously following all directions for break-in (it is soooooo hard). I have mildly kicked it down a few times on the freeway to pass someone, nothing radical - not flooring it or anything.
Surely that shouldn't be a problem.
Should it?
