18" Winter Wheel Option For E53?

I would like to have a dedicated wheel/tire set for our Chicago winters. My car is 2019 E53 Sedan with the standard 19" all season wheel/tire option:
245/40 R 19 on 8 J x 19 ET 20 (Front)
275/35 R 19 on 9 J x 19 ET 49 (Rear)

I prefer to use winter tires in the winter rather than all season and, if possible, "minus 1" narrower wheels. The 2019 E450 4Matic offers a wheel/tire package that is 245/45 R18 on 8.0 J x 18 ET 43 on all four wheels. I am wondering whether there would be any problem using those wheels designed for the E450 on my car. I've called the dealer and they said they would have to check it through trial and error. The overall circumference is virtually the same, but the 18" package does change other things (closer to suspension in the rear, further away in the front, by almost an inch in both cases). I believe the E53 has larger brakes than the E450, and that could be a problem.

Tirerack doesn't offer an 18" option for my car, but the model is still fairly new and maybe they haven't gotten around to testing it.

Can anyone offer advice here? Thanks!

E53 Cabriolet
I would be shocked if you can find 18’s that fit. I went through the exercise last year for my E53 cabriolet and it was a challenge to find 19’s that worked. There is very little clearance for the breaks. The OEM package my dealer had were 4 identical 19 inch rims. My summers are the 20’s but I do not expect there would be different breaks by rim size.

Looks to me 19 is the min. Size. Don’t take a chance of 18

Thanks. I guess the way not to go wrong is to buy exact replacements for the original wheels, but those are AMG wheels and very expensive. Can anyone recommend a place where I could get cheaper wheels with the exact specs? Or a place that sells good reconditioned wheels?

RTX Envy

Manufacturer Part Number: 081762

19x8.5 et21 ... you can also run winter tire size 255/40/19
5x112
cb 66.6

Square setup should work with no issue for the front. The rear would have no clearance issue but it will poke out/extend out 20mm from the fender wheel well.

This wheel model comes with staggered option for the rear.

For this wheel in the rear, the wheel will appear to poke/extend out 15mm from the fender wheel well. No issue with clearing the suspension component at all.

Between the two setup, I would probably suggest to go with the staggered setup.

There aren’t many 19” wheels at all to choose from ... if you want to be as close to factory spec.

Hey Bobblehead, question for you also on E53 wheels. If I wanted to do a 20 inch setup and I have the option of 9.0 x 20 or 10.0 x 20 and ET 25-45 for the wheels I'm looking at, how would you proceed to the best fit closest to stock?

The factory spec is 8.0J x 20 ET 20 in front and 9.0J x 20 ET 49 in the rear.

In addition to Bobblehead's RTX Envy, I've discovered another option for 19" wheels, It's TSW Snetterton wheels with the following specs:

Front: 8J x 19 ET 20, 5x112 bolt pattern, thread size M14x1.5, 72.1* center bore
Part number: 1980SNT205112S72 (Carid price 10/15/19 = 312.40, free shipping)

Rear: 8J x 19 ET 43, 5x112 bolt pattern, thread size M14x1.5, 72.1* center bore
Part number: 1980SNT455112S72 (Carid price 10/15/19 = 312.40, free shipping)

The bolt pattern matches specs for the E53, the center bore is larger so hub rings would be required. I would have 245/40 Pirelli Sottozero 3 Run Flats on all four wheels since my car has neither a spare tire nor a tire-changing kit, and not even a can of sealer with the small air compressor.

Unfortunately, Tirerack doesn't offer either TSW wheels or RTX wheels.

Bobblehead, what do you think of this option?

The factory spec is 8.0J x 20 ET 20 in front and 9.0J x 20 ET 49 in the rear.

If you go with 20 inch ... with slightly different width vs factory setup

Front 20 x 8.5 - then choose et 15 - 20. Tire size, you can choose 245/35/20 or 255/35/20

I don't recommend going with 20 x 9 for the front as you will need a real low offset to closely match the factory spec. ie. <13 offset.

In your example, say 20 x 9 et 25. It will be 18mm closer towards the suspension components.
If you go 20 x 9 et 45. Then it will 38mm closer towards the suspension components.

> I cannot say for certain whether these two examples will result in any wheel clearance issue against the suspension components, only an actual test fit can determine it at the wheel shop. In my opinion, anything greater 7mm variance would be my limit ... to be on the safe side
***
Rear 20 x 10 - then choose et 40 - 42. Tire size, you can choose 275/30/20 or 285/30/20

this wheel spec. will be okay and poses no issue clearance with the suspension.

The only thing you may want to rethink of this wheel is the lip. Salt water can eat into the finish of the lip esp. and the chrome finishes and what worry me also is the wheel spokes/face is moved back to allow for the lip to be there, for such construction, you have to get an actual test fit to ensure they will clear the brake caliper. Alternatively, you can have the wheel painted and then (optional) ceramic coated to protect the finish

If you have a bigger budget, take a look at the Rohana wheels too. It would be around $400 per wheel though. 19x8.5 and 19x9.5 can be had with the custom offset which can be closely matched to factory spec.

I see, well that's not what I was hoping for. Right now I have another set of tires only for winter that I put on the factory rims and would love to just get a another set of 20s that fits this car but it's proving to be very difficult. Are you aware of any 20 inch setups that would work? Tires I have are 245/35 20 and 275/30 20. I am happy to leave the winters on factory rims if necessary but I would really like another set.

my advise is to talk to your local wheel specialist too and get their take as well.

If you custom order a 20" with factory offset for summer usage, then there should be no issue to speak of. The low offset for the front is kind of a pain to deal with when looking for a pre-made wheel on the market.

https://vossenwheels.com/wheel/hf-3/

after doing a bit more research, for the front 20x9 et25 should work in most cases (it would be at the upper limit), but it is still subject to an actual test fit and the wheel is preferrably does not have a deep concave spoke face.

I tried my local shop last year and they test fit a couple things with no luck. That's when I just picked up the tires that fit and moved on for the season as I had no time left. Anywhere you recommend? I'm in London ON so not too far from you.

I don't know any wheel shop in London, On. There are many in GTA you can consider.

Tires are Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 MOE

Here’s the car with them on

I am surprised your front with that setup did not touch the suspension components as it is 34mm closer to it. With that width, I’m guessing you are running 275’s

Actually they are 245/40R19’s as they wanted a little less width to get more bite in the snow

We’re right that it was tight and you definitely need someone that will fit them before you buy

I ended up buying snows for my 2019 E53 convertible in 20" size as well. I keep checking to see if there are any aftermarket wheels to fit the car, so far, no luck. The 20" MB wheels are stupid expensive! Please let us know if you find some wheels!!!

I was recommended 19x9 et 25 up front and a 19x10 et 50 on some Zito wheels. bobblehead, what do you make of that? They claim it's a guaranteed fit with no rubbing or clearance.
