Purge valve loud ticking noise
Literally 100 miles from my scheduled 20k miles service, I heard a loud ticking noise coming from the engine compartment. After the service I was told that the noise is coming from the purge valve which is doing its job so it’s considered normal operation. I didn’t get a good answer to my “how come this never happened for 20k miles of operating the vehicle?” question. The noise was not there when the car was new so I feel that something is not right. Any thoughts?

Yes, in my case I think something is wrong. I near the noise pretty consistently and can’t explain (nor can the dealer) how my purge valve was quiet for 20k miles but now is ticking loudly but yet, it’s seen as normal operation.
I’ll get a second dealer to weigh in on the issue but first I thought that I was going to get some comments here on the forum.

It’s still hard to explain why I didn’t hear the knocking noise for 20k miles but now I do. Especially since nobody else on this forum has had any similar experience. If it’s normal operation, a lot more folks would have had the same issue. Quite strange.

Super common and not an issue, just an annoyance. If they were quiet for 20k you were simply lucky. There are guys that have said they were replaced and started making noise 100 miles later. It’s only audible with windows down like in a neighborhood with stuff for the noise to bounce off of. Mine does it and it doesn’t bother me. If you wanna try replacing them by all means go for it, but either way it’s no issue. 👍🏼

When i first got my car (few weeks ago) i also freaked out, ran to the dealer. They told me its normal sound from purge valve. Happens when u idle for a bit, the gases build up and it starts working. Was told its normal. I guess im ok, but it is very loud for sure, even my wife said ur engine is knocking lol

That's what they thought too on the wife's E53 when the OBD light came on and a more pronounced ticking noise started, a bad purge valve. Eleven weeks later and ~10k usd on warranty charges they replaced the entire top end, HP fuel pump and the ECU and wiring harnesses for good measure.

99% of the time its normal operation, 1% of the time it could be an actual fault.
Mine gets loud if I am driving through a small street with cars parked on either side, I can then hear it. I am used to it but have some peace of mind knowing that its normal.
