This is a small team of guys, one of which is a dedicated spotter. I can’t say on which side your idea of fun falls relative to them...but to any casual motorist you (and many of us) are all in the same boat.
I'm a cyclist, and fear for my life every time I ride, which with over 10k miles this year means lots of fear. But I stay off of busy roads when possible, I follow the rules (yes, stop at lights and stop signs) and I HATE drivers who do the near-pass. I have cameras, which may one-day record my death, but such is life. Every day we walk out the door and go get groceries, we take a risk. I prefer to see these experienced, and seemingly cautious guys in a life-adventure on (public) highways, more so than the soccer mom or a-holes late to his tee-time pass me within inches while I follow the rules on local roads.

Onwards and upwards.

I used to bike regularly. Bike lanes all over San Diego. Was great when I first moved here. Then with the advent of the smart phone driver attention went elsewhere and they started killing people right and left. Usually hit and run. One day driving home (having ridding ~18 miles at lunch) I watched a woman in her SUV in front of me driving half in and out of the bike lane yakking on her cell phone as they were announcing the third fatal hit and run in San Diego that week. I realized that had I been riding in front of this woman I would never have seen her coming, plowed over from behind, no chance to avoid, just wham game over. Shame, it was great exercise.

We have a really active bike culture at work and have had a number of people injured by cars - thankfully none too serious. We also held the 8 person team record for the Race Across America from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD of 5 days, 5 hours, 5 minutes - till 2018 when another team broke it. Now 5:03:43.
