Tune Question

If you have a tune on your car and something were to go wrong (need service), and you used a HHT to flash the tune back to stock before you took the car into the dealer. Would they be able to see there was a tune on it and still flag it?

You would be absolutely ****ed and you would have no warranty.

Source: I have no warranty because I tuned my car.

Only if they did a deep dive into your ECU.

A "good tune" will not do anything to harm your car.

False. I pulled up the W213 project for our cars in Monaco. It says clear as day: "Software Verification Number" and "Flash Programming Counter" (two things that change on tune). I can give you screenshots if you'd like.

I don't think clicking 2 buttons is "doing a deep dive into your ECU" (that assumes they don't have this check automated in Xentry/STAR diagnostics, which they most likely do) for a company looking to not lose thousands on warranty claims.

If you tune, count on your VIN getting flagged and your warranty claims getting denied. Multiple people on the forums other than just me have their VIN flagged. Some don't because their service advisors like them/can stop the technicians from flagging the VIN. I have no idea the logistics of that gray area in the process.

What if, you can get your hands on a second ECU, and you replace the stock one that came with the car with the back up ecu. Would there be any signs of a tune or no?

I have a second ECU for my GTS, bring it in for service work and swap as soon as I get home..

Again a good tune will not harm your engine but a bad attitude towards your Mercedes service manager will get you flagged every time..

Tips are a great service tool and respect for the people working on your car goes a long way.. Just because you drive an AMG doesn't mean you're special.

The dealer will have to flash it to your car's vin and perform all updates as part of the purchase. Not cheap but it's nice knowing you have back up.
Just remember to use it every now and then because they do have engine start run counters in the software.
The last thing you want is a car with 15k miles and two starts on the clock.

How do you justify having a virgin ECU mated to your car, to the service advisor, when the original is fine? If you're friendly with him, you can tell him the truth. But if your relationship is not great, won't he smell a rat?

It's my car and if I want to buy parts for it and pay for the install... Rats only stink when they lie.

But the thing is if nothing has happened to my car after 18k miles with a tune nothing is gonna happen tune only related..

Play nice, tip your service people from time to time and it's a win win.

Being nice and tipping does not do squat. Using the same dealer for years especially with multiple cars and getting to know not just the service advisors but specific techs to work on your car is the only way to keep from getting flagged randomly. The tips just tip things in your favor after you get to know them

Something does not compute here: if good friends in service don't dive into the ECU, why would one spend $$s on redundant ECU?

I never said anything about being friends since my visits to the service dept. are rare.. Hey do what ever you like after all it's your car.

True, just my interpretation. Reading "Tips are a great service tool" translates into making friends.... Anything wrong with that?
