The engine takes long time to warm up

Hi,
The engine in my e63s -18 takes too long time to wam up, need to drive almost 15 minutes at 100km / h to get up to 70 degrees.
The gearbox takes longer to get warm, almost 25 minutes in 100km/h , to get up to 65 degrees.
Is this normal, has anyone had similar experience before?

depends where you are from. In a warmer climate, car needs about <10 minutes ( I would say 6-7 mins usually) to be at optimal operating temp. In colder weather, it needs a longer time, perhaps 10-15 mins.

In this case, it is a bit unusual to take this long.

I can time mine today (report back here a bit later) as today's temp @ my location is pretty well bang on to where you are.

for some reason when I'm on the highway it takes longer VS when I'm driving around town. your time sounds on par with mine, in the city its a lot faster to warm up

Daycare drop off is 8 minute or 3km round trip with 3-4 stops at max 50km/hr. If it's 20c+ outside it will just barely get to 70f before parking back at home. If it's 15-19c it will need an extra 3-5min of driving.

I usually put the car's engine mode in sport (?) so that it keeps the revs higher (maybe 1500k?). If I don't do this it will take another 3-7 minutes before warming up driving at city speeds.

Yes, happened to me with W212 while back: could not reach normal operating temp when driving on the freeway, at less than 65 F. City stop and go was OK.
These cars have efficient airflow and huge cooling capacity, with thermostat open and at the high speed takes a long time to warm up the engine.
Believe beast was barely getting to the normal temp after about 100 miles and average approx 70 mph!

Those warm up times are in the range that I experience on my 2019 in San Diego, CA

Could be apples and oranges comparison.
before we can claim “in the range” can you please specify:
1. San Diego outside temp?
2. Stop and go in the city, or cruising at 70 mph on I5?

Seems long to me and I'm in San Diego too (North County).

Outside temps in the morning vary from a low of around 40 deg F on a cold day to upper 60s typically, though we have been having a heatwave lately.

My engine temp changes from blue to white usually in a couple of miles and the transmission temp changes from blue to white within 4 miles. I know this because it almost always turns white before I reach my office and that's almost exactly 4 miles.

My comment was based on over a year of numerous drives and a subjective remembrance of how long it takes to warm up. It was not a specific instance.

I assume that everyone is looking at the temperature readout on the Performance panel. The top display is the oil temperature, not the water temperature AFAIK.

That's where I'm looking. Top readout for the engine goes white somewhere around 160 deg F and bottom for the transmission goes white at 122 deg F. I don't remember the top number exactly because it always goes white much earlier than the bottom one so that's the one I'm always looking at.

I don't recall trying launch control while the engine and trans are cold, but I heard that launch control is disabled until the temps have turned white.

So, the engine is at operating temperature at 195 degrees F, the oil temperature will reach 210+ degrees F if the engine is driven hard. There are auxiliary coolers for the transmission oil and the engine oil to prevent overheating. There is no thermostat in the loop (that's for the water). My engine reaches 195 degrees within 5 miles of non-highway driving. At the same time, the oil temp is usually 165 degrees and the transmission is at 110 degrees. Ambient temp was around 60 degrees this AM when I logged the readings today.

Temperature

Hello,
I took a ride with my car, see attached picture.
Engine temperature seems to be good but the gearbox is a big question.
Do you have any tips or advice ?
The outside temp: 14C.

79C = 142F 39C = 102F

That’s a very long time ...

highways or local roads ?

in wintry temperatures (like -10 degree C), this will never (per se) be in the normal temperature zone then

It's been almost two years since I did my European delivery of the E63. Drove mostly around Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein - In fact we hit all five in one day just because we could If was great fun for the girls.

Temps were frequently down below 0 C in the mornings when we would start out for the day and I don't recall any problems with the car not getting both engine and transmission temps up into the white. I was strictly following the running-in instructions so wasn't watching the numbers closely in anticipation of being able to tromp on the throttle - but that's my recollection for what it is worth.

As mentioned here earlier with my reading, your reading is certainly strange. Maybe time for a visit and see what the dealer says and go from there.

here is some general info on running a cold engine

Yes, I understand thats big engine and takes some time to get warm, and the gearbox takes more time than the engine.
But what I canīt undertand is why some, exactly same car takes maximum half the time as mine.

I compare the same weather conditions as mine.
