I was referring to the area directly below the carbon fiber. Looks like a rougher grain leather with stitching. We have some of this in our GLE580 with the exclusive leather package, I thought maybe they would leave it out of the E63S. Are you saying that area is plastic with fake stitching?

Yes, but the stitching is real.

Other than making cabin smell of cheap perfume, does this serve any other purpose? Maybe there are some cool neutral scents for when the car is very old?
You get a charcoal cabin filter and a cabin air ionizer, which is the reason I specced it for my order, as they do actually keep your cabin air fresher and cleaner by ionizing the air to attract and trap particulate matter, or make it heavy enough that it sinks to the floor. I agree that the whole scent thing seems a little weird, but some people seem to really like some of the scents. Mercedes offers a few choices so maybe you would like a different one? In any case, I think the ionizer is the thing that makes that package potentially worth getting.

I turn on my scent occasionally when driving past some stinking object or following a smoker or whatever. The canister has lasted three years so far given the infrequent use.

I'd have to look up which one it is, but we (wife, kids, and I) all actually like it. The car came with a set of samples so when the time comes to replace the current canister we will consider switching if another one of the scents seems OK, but given we're pretty happy with this one might just stick with it too.

My biggest complaint about the scents is the outrageous pricing to replace them, over $100 on Amazon and likely more if you bought directly from the dealer. MB says they're "special" in that they won't stick to your clothes or skin so you won't exit your car smelling like them, but it's quite pricey. Although, like you said, owners generally report they last quite a while.

Also be aware the HUD can be significantly dimmed when viewed through polarized sunglasses. I thought my HUD was failing as it was very dim until I realized it was my new sunglasses 😬

Thanks but I still can't figure out how to adjust HUD brightness. It's fine in the day but turns very dim at night.

Have you tried the knob to the right of the headlight switch to see if it changes the brightness along with the rest of the display?

Yes. Doesn't work for the HUD. Only works for the two screens in the dash.

Try to adjust the brightness at night. It might be bimodal for brightness.

There is an adjustment, but I don't remember where. Once mine was set up I haven't fiddled with it in a long time. It is in one of the settings menus.

In my copy of the 2018 sedan manual it is on page 215
