Cracks and pops only in Sport+ ??

Is it normal that my 2019 E63 S I just bought only cracks and pops when shifting in Sport+?? I even bought a RennTech EVM hoping that forcing the exhaust flap 100% open at all times might cause it to crackle at least a little bit when shifting hard in Comfort or even Sport but no-go... I mean, the EVM makes A HELL of a difference in terms of enhancing the deep, throaty sound of the exhaust in general, but since I didn't quite get the effect I was most hoping for, I'm not sure if I would have done it again knowing what I know now...

Was the install easy? Did you take any videos of the before and after? I ordered a 2021 and am stressed that it isn't going to sound good based on the European videos.

The pops & bangs are a function of the ignition timing and not the exhaust. The exhaust is just where they come out, but the engine is actually producing them by extending the combustion into the exhaust cycle and that only happens in S+ and Race.

I didn't take any pics/videos while doing it, but I could certainly put together a detailed play-by-play of the install process if you or others would like. It is a bit more work than I was anticipating because it requires fishing the wires through a grommet in the trunk then routing them behind the heat shields to each exhaust tip where you disconnect the plug for the flap actuators and then connect the EVM cables there. Took me about an hour and a half under the car to get the cables neatly routed and secured.

So what you're saying is.... I really need to get a RennTech tune next.

Treat yo'self

That said I get some good pops in Sport when I'm on it, or am I just nuts?

Maybe a little in Sport, but I can't say I've spent much time in Sport. I'm either in comfort when tooling around local surface roads or Sport+ when the speed limit picks up a bit, or Race when I'm on a roadway where I'd like the rear end to move around a bit more. I really hate the way the ESP cuts in so early in Sport+ and starts clamping on the rear brakes. Basically, any time the little yellow icon is flashing on you're burning brake pads and discs while on throttle. I don't want to burn down my CCBs unnecessarily.

Put ESP in Sport Handling mode and it should let you slide the rear end in S+.

I have a Canadian E63s and I just set the "Individual" custom drive setting Engine to Dynamic (?) and Exhaust to "Loud". All the cracks and pops.

Which yellow icon are you referring to? I wasn’t aware of that but makes sense if you’re just wearing your brakes down while properly driving the car as it’s meant to be driven.

There is an icon that pops up in the dash - the exact location may depend upon which instrument display option you have configured. The MY18 E63 Sedan Operator Manual I have in .pdf shows it on page 8 as call-out 2. The next page (9) shows it as ESP and points you to page 442. However, the icon itself is actually covered on page 445 of the manual. It says that if the yellow ESP warning lamp flashes while the vehicle is in motion, the ESP system is intervening. It suggests adapting your diving style to suit the road and weather conditions.

This would mean adapting a bit less pressure on the right foot to keep the rear tire from wanting to spin.

Or, my preferred method, which is to select the Sport handling mode which is a bit more forgiving wrt to the rear end getting loose.

If you go catless downpipes with your valves deleted, you'll get flames along with the louder pops and bangs on downshifts.

:-D

Do you know if RennTech or another brand has an option where the exhaust flap becomes open at all times that doesn't add in the remote button complication?

You don't have to use the remote.... I tossed mine in the back of my junk drawer 5 minutes after installing and hitting the button to fully open the flaps the first time. They've been fully open ever since.
