2021 Wagon Observations at 5900 miles

I just passed the 5900 miles mark on the clock. I'm still learning more about the features of the MBUX system and the rest of the controls. I finally located (with the help of others here) the Glide function within the Individual settings. Totally useless IMO to use because I use that setting to change the drive characteristics to Sport mode while leaving the suspension in Comfort. Anyway, I found that there are additional settings for the A/C that allows for a more even distribution of airflow (on the second hidden screen), there is a touch setting for restoring the Individual setting without using the control button on the steering wheel, more automation with regard to updates, sound system parameters, etc. Truly, the car is a computer on wheels. The only modification that I've made is to change the summer Michelin tires to Michelin all-seasons. The noise level in the car went down around 10db with that change. The transmission has also smoothed out a lot so that upshifts are imperceptible and the final downshift from 2 to 1 when coming to a stop no longer exhibits any lurching. There have been 4 updates OTA so far: 3 maps, 1 MBUX. One thing that has changed for the better is that the occasional squealing that I was sometimes getting on a low-speed stop from the CCB's has gone away. The service tech who changed out my tires told me that the noise sometimes comes from differing torque on the wheel bolts. Anyway, since the tires were changed out, there has been no more noise in 1500 miles. Overall mileage is around 19.1 with around 40% interstate travel. Compared to my previous E63S, this vehicle is much more refined where it counts.

Does anyone know if the adaptive headlight update that can be purchased from another forum contributor can be applied on the 2021 E63S? I haven't seen any discussion concerning that for this MY. Thank you.

I agree with your assessment that it is a computer on wheels. A little too much technology for my tastes - but - I’m getting used to it day by day.

It’s an amazing car - stupid fast and incredibly comfortable. Very pleased with it.

Great to hear that the transmission gets smoother over time. Are those updates over the air or do you need to bring car into the shop? Thanks for the update.

Updates

Updates are remote. Don’t have to bring it in for service.

OTA = Over the Air. No shop visit. Notifications via Mercedes Me app.Transmission is a learning computer which adjusts to your driving style.

Appreciate your updates. Curious, where did you find additional even distribution AC settings? Is it in the "Menu" button two tabs where the air fragrance settings are?

I am a few months into my wagon as well, gotta say the quality integrity is not as buttoned up as the S63. Nothing big, just a few build issues…

Depress the MENU tab on the console. All will be revealed.

Paint overspray on the inside edge of lift gate, a loose side partition, small glue creep from inside left side door panels…

I've seen nothing in my wagon. The only item that I noted on my 2018 E63S and still exists on my 2021 E63S is that the lower window trim piece on the driver's door has a tendency to slightly creep up at the back edge. I'm usually pushing it down again when I notice it. The glue holding the piece is not strong enough to keep it down. The other side of the car does not do this. No other trim or finish issues that I've noted.

Mine happened on the passenger side. No issue with the driverside. I'm annoyed that this will continue happening based on your post, but at least it's a lease and I do not have to deal with it outside of warranty.

I have had the front plastic trim around the passenger side radiator in the lower part of the bumper break a tab and start flopping around. The window trim piece I described above, lifted up.
The car sounds like I am in a hailstorm when it rains. My 2018 M5 with carbon roof was a ton quieter. Transmission is terribly clunky when shifting from reverse to drive and vise versa. And the interior rattles galore.....

I haven’t seen any of these issues on my 21. The retractable cargo cover is stuck on one side, so it’s useless right now. The carbon fiber on the drivers door has some dull low spots. Also what’s looks like a couple of micro cracks on the surface of the passenger headlight. Other than that the car is awesome and I love it!

How is the orange peel on these cars? In recent models it seems orange peel is a feature of MB paint systems. Nearly every panel on my W166 has either total or partial orange peel. Other contemporary models are similar.

Not sure about op but from what I observed, It happens on some colours more than others, I seen W213 lunar blue (cavansite blue) having lots of orange peel for example.

I'm not sure if the darker colors have more or less orange peel. I think it's just more noticeable. The way that the clear coat is applied is the issue. Doesn't other me enough to perform paint correction. Of course, the Magno paints have their own set of issues.

Hello HBerman, et al,

The Graphite is a really nice color but you have orange peel issues with it? I have the Night Black Magno paint and no issues with it so far (since June 10, 2018). Really easy to wash but I always put it back in the garage to dry it off due to the sun drying the water and leaving water spots. Just curious though, what issues are you aware of that the Magno paints suffer from? Also, I'm fortunate as I have not had any of the issues described by other members, to date anyway. I have had the following issues though:
1. The whoosh carbon fiber trim on the left fender was loose (probably happened when front clip mask was applied). Replaced by dealer at no charge.
2. Secondary battery wasn't holding a charge. Replaced by dealer at no charge.
3. water hoses between turbos eaten through by rodent while at dealership getting routine service. Replaced by dealer at no charge.
Everything else seems tight with no rattles or squeaks and all panels/trim appear to be in place and solid. I've been over some really severely bad roads and there is more road noise but on ok roads the ride is fine. Currently have about 9,300 miles on the wagon.

My E63 sedan is lunar blue and the orange peel is quite noticeable all over the car.

Magno paints are an accident waiting to happen. Babying the washing regimen, being unable to just touch up a panel in the event of a minor scratch, worrying about people rubbing up against the doors/panels etc. Too much to deal with on a regular basis IMO.

Almost all mass production cars will exhibit this issue because of the manner in which the clear coat is applied as well as how it dries in the paint booth. Interesting, though, that my 2018 E63S in Black did not have significant surface issues. There is no clear coat on the non-mettalic paint colors.

I'm actually quite pleased with my selenite grey magno. Super easy to clean. Spray off with power washer, hit it with soap cannon using regular washing soap with no shine additives, wash off with hand mitt and rinse bucket, rinse car with power washer and dry. No waxing polishing or other car. Made even easier by the fact I have CCBs and no brake dust to clean off the wheels.

I use a CR Spotless water filter so water spots aren't a problem either. I could let the car drip dry, but lately I've been using my shop vac to blow off the water and then just doing touch up on the windows and trim.

Have used reasonable care when parking and so far no door nicks so no panel touch ups have been required.

The other thing about the magno finishes, especially the grey magno, is that that car looks clean even when it is fairly dirty with a coat of dust.

It doesn't shine like when it is clean of course, but because the finish isn't glossy, the dust blends right in. If you wipe a finger across it or wipe down a body panel then of course you'll see it but otherwise you don't notice it unless you look. So I don't really have to wash the car that often.
