How many are also having the the 4 oil separators replaced as mentioned earlier in the thread ? assuming they're cheap insurance.. unsure where they live/labor involved . In theory these are getting plugged and causing premature rms leaks. Maybe i'm spitballing , but just read through the older posts .

I can help with that! We offer extended warranties from both Fidelity and Freedom Warranty, top-tier coverage, accepted at all Mercedes-Benz dealers and licensed independents in North America. For quotes, questions and example contracts you can reach out at tgibson@highline-autos.com or (855) 924-1333 , I would just need a VIN and current miles.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. The car had about 51K on it when I brought it in. The service advisor was noting that it wasn't covered under warranty until I pointed out to him that I bought an extended warranty that took me to 100K.

2018 AMG E63s
Bought my car new August 2018 built date is June 2018.

I had my car in for its 48 month 80,000km / 50,000 miles service. All clear with no issues.
5 days later oil on my garage floor.
Took the car back to the dealer service and initially was told it was the sump plug washer, they replaced it then took the car for a test drive.
They put the car back on the hoist to check and oil was leaking again.

This time I was told its the real main seal.

Car will off the road at least 4 weeks as the parts have to come from Germany.

On a positive and lucky note I bought extended warranty when I bought the car so all is covered

It will be interesting to see how many real main seal failures occur once the kilometer/ mileage gets up around 50,000

I'm having the same issue; however, Mercedes said its not under warranty. I have their extended warranty.
Which dealer are you going to?

I"m trying to resolve this issue with my dealer. They are telling me that the extended warranty isn't covering it. Are you doing the oil separators and RMS?
Do you know which part this falls under the warranty?

I just saw a small patch of oil on my garage floor today and after reading this thread, I suspect I am in the same position as well, RMS issue.

mine is 2018 with 100,000km. I see $$$$$ on this repair.

This is starting to become a pervasive issue with the engines at 50000 miles. I would suspect that we'll see a TSB and a program for replacement.

It seems so. The M17x seems to have so far avoided systemic issues, after early production having unsolved misfires which seem to be resolved with latest production.

The M17x has been a low volume engine so far, due to its use in AMG and highest option non-AMG powertrains.

E63S Wagon
My E63 Wagon (41k miles) just went into the shop this week for a failure of the rear main seal. Pretty healthy leak based on what was on my garage floor. Under warranty, and I am glad I bought the extended warranty. Car will be there for about 10 days in total it looks like.

If only a handful of 2018 owners are experiencing this, I doubt MB will see this as a priority to follow up with a TSB.

I am scheduled to take mine in on Oct 28 for further investigation. Right now, I have a bad feeling.

I just got my car back after 6 weeks. The oil separators was causing the rear main seal to fail. Which meant Mercedes wasn’t going to cover that part under warranty. Eventually they agreed if not it would have been a $10k fix.

Are the oil separators a maintenance item that are to be changed during a Service B or at a predetermined interval? I do not see them called out as a service item in the maintenance manual.

For sure on a maint. item the way it seems to be going . The separators are not expensive , unsure how labor intensive it is. Since these rms leaks seem to be in the 40-50k range - maybe around 30k is a good time to replace them.

Update: I took my car to my own mechanic today and he has found the rear main seal started to leak oil but he calls it the early stage or minor leaks for now. Eventually, it will have to be fixed to avoid any potential damage to engine.

I change oil every 7500km and do my maintenance as prescribed.

Mechanic wiped off the oil afterwards The job is a bit too complex for him to deal with. So, I would have to go back to dealer and get murdered with their rates.

one last note, my mechanic advised me using 5w40 (instead of my normal 0w40) as it may be a bandaid solution in the meantime for the leaks.

2018 with 50k miles and a bad rear main seal. Dealer has done a few of these but hasn’t done anything with the oil separators on any of the repairs. What are you guys seeing to know that the oil separators are a problem? I may do them myself if it’s needed.
