2018 W213 E63S Sedan - 41k miles, rear main seal seal/retainer failure

she leakin... she soakin wet...

active leak of engine oil when the car is sitting

happened 2 days after i brought it to an aftermarket shop for some tires and an alignment (did they beat on it? idk) and 1 day after installing blackboost cold air intake. coincientdal? who knows

could it be "blow by" from running lots of boost on a tune (oil leaking out of rings/ring seal)? doubt it

could i have blocked/messaged with crankcase ventilation when doing the intakes? not sure

either way, tranny gotta come out...

looked on the w213 threads to see if anybody else had this issue, figured i get it started. couple of tech friends of mine have said it's fairly common. google says w211 had it a lot. w212 not sure.

idk why taking out a part that failed and putting in the exact same part is going to fix the issue but hey... we'll see

Thanks for sharing. Never heard of anyone's rear main seal failing either.

Didn't your car basically run stock numbers and dyno near stock levels on a tune? If I remember right, your numbers tuned were slower than a few stock numbers.
Sounds to me your engine was not all that healthy with that tune, to begin with. That could have caused some oil-related failures you are seeing now (knock, blowby, etc etc)

Either way, that's terrible to read, I would start with logging (after the repairs) to see what your engine is doing

First I have seen on this site. If you're pulling the transmission to find the leak, there aren't many candidates in that space. Is it a safe assumption you ruled out an external leak before pulling the transmission?

Mercedes-AMG E63S
I've had 2 main seal failures

I took my 2019 E63S in for service to the dealer and they told me that the main seal had failed. The dealer had the car for 25 days. I took it home on a Friday and the following Friday we noticed stains in my driveway. This car had NEVER leaked before. I called the dealer and took it back. They said that the main seal had failed again due to "parts failure." It was another 23 days before I got the car back. I cannot begin to describe my level of disappointment with the dealer for how this was handled. I was promised telephone updates that never came, and thanks to the Mercedes Me app, I was able to tell that the car sat for days without being touched. Oh, and in case you're curious, there are NO mods to the car. Everything under the hood is as it was the day I took delivery from this same dealer.

How many miles are on your car? Or I guess how many when you first noticed the leak?

FYI: they are opening a PTSS case (where the tech at the dealer needs higher level support, maybe to Germany? not sure) and I was told this is actually not that uncommon so far

All in all, things are looking positive. I’ve heard the 4 oil separators (2 left, 2 right) are at play here.

Did they replace the oil separators finally, do you know?

I have it on good account that if you replace the rear main seal and the oil separators (as advised by Mercedes Support under one car's support case, not mine), the problem went away.

I have heard of a case exactly like yours. Rear main seal failed, replace it (and not the oil separators), failed again. I think I was told that process repeated 3-4x times before they finally went to support and were told oil separators.

This doesn't sound like a MAJOR issue but definitely sounds like something that should not be failing this early on an AMG.

one of my friends said to think of it like a free continuous rolling oil change the way it’ll leak out and then you just top it off

i got no DTCs/CELs so i guess i caught it early

dealer covered it even on a flagged VIN for tuning, said it's super common. 40k miles, watch out fellas.

that was my plan as well

i wanted an f90 m5 but i like to run a stage 2 tune and with that engine, it just can’t reliably handle torque due to weak rods/rod bearing design from what i can tell

and a 2021 w213 is $2,200/mo anyway you spin it, i just didn’t see the value

mate i have no clue

i haven’t had a car in 3 weeks

gonna be walking another 1-2 it seems

i’m pretty sure it’s a 20 hour book hour repair and over $3k-$5k

tranny comes out, replace seal, replace left and right oil separators

Ah, sorry. I thought the repairs were completed. Bummer. I hope that what you are experiencing is not a pervasive engine problem.

Anyone else have RMS issues with their W213 E63S? My car has just under 80k miles and has been dripping slightly since 75k. Not enough to have to add any oil in the last 5k miles, but enough to see some spotting on the garage floor. Really weird, symptomatically-- the leaking has been very intermittent.

It's in the shop today for an oil change and I asked them to chase the leak. So far, they are suspecting RMS but cleaned it up underneath and will test drive to see if they can pinpoint the leak exactly.

You have the highest mileage W213 E63s that I’ve read about on this forum lol. Good to hear people are driving their cars. (Sorry to hear about the leak however).

2018 E63s
I just recently picked up a CPO 2018 E63s with 50k miles and on my second day of ownership, I noticed some oil on the ground. I brought it back to the dealer to have them look at it and it turned out to be the rear main seal. Just adding to the thread so there's more info regarding this issue.
