Massive Stone Chip - Dealer or Independent Fitter??

Hello All,

Just got a nasty stone chip on the windscreen earlier today. Its left a huge chip in the screen. Due to the size, I imagine the windscreen will need replacing. Now my insurance company want me to used an independent glass fitter but I have heard they sometimes fit non-OEM windscreen brands. The windscreen looks like it has some little cameras inside it. I'm guessing this would be the brake assist or maybe the Adapative headlights. I have read from other forum members that some of the independent technicians won't be able to reacalibrate the cameras and some of the other tech in the windscreen. I'm from the UK and don't want any **** up with the E63. Do I risk a cheap job via insurance or should I shell out the myself for the new windscreen?

If the insurance company refuse to let Mercedes do the work, does anyone have any idea what a total windscreen replacement would cost?

Thanks,

- MdotLife

Typically insurance will try to opt for 3rd party non oem windshield replacement , in most cases if you want OEM you would have to pay for the difference.

I have the Mercedes windshield replacement insurance because I wanted to make sure I get factory glass.

I had to have my windshield replaced in Dallas due to a very large rock that hit me on while on my drive across country after the car was delivered to the states. What the dealer told me there is that the trick is to show up at the dealer (after verifying they have the factory glass on hand) and have the car in for service to have the glass replaced. Then call the insurance company to make the claim. At that point they can't really turn you down for the factory glass.

The insurance companies can't really force you to use third party glass and installers in most cases, but they can try to twist your arm into using their preferred installer and after market cheap glass.

Just use Safelite and request OEM glass. Don't sweat it.

Some *holes decided they wanted any gold bricks I may have stashed in my E63S and attacked both front side windows. I yelled at them before anything was broken, but both windows were gouged pretty bad. Went to the insurance web site and filed a claim online. They suggested a third party glass company (Safelite) but allowed anyone of my choosing as long as it was within market rates. I had the dealer do the replacement. The thought of some minimum wage untrained "tech" tearing the doors apart to change out the glass is sobering. I could see broken clips and squeaks like both doors were hosting a rat party. Dealer did the fix w/MB glass. The dealer charged me and I submitted the claim to insurance. Got a check for the entire amount less deductible.
