2021 Exhaust photo
Any chance anyone can snap a picture of the mufflers on their 2021 E63s? I am trying to better understand the changes in the exhaust from the pre-facelift to the facelift. Now that I think about it a pre-facelift photo may also be useful. My 2021 will be here soon and I am trying to figure out if swapping to a pre facelift stock exhaust will fix the new muted facelift sound.

There must be some difference in the exhaust since the 2018 sounds amazing and loud and the 2021 seems so quiet. Perhaps if we get some photos we can see if there is an added resonator or larger mufflers.

Im in the same boat. I don’t think photos are going to do us any good though, OCD’s 21 photos above look identical to the system on my old 2020. The baffling inside the mufflers has to be different though. EU sound regs changed for 21, requiring that their sound limits be met in *every* exhaust mode available on the car. So…no more “hooligan mode.”
Maybe there’s a slight difference in tone, but nothing like the pre-21 cars had. My plan is to live with the 21 for a bit and see how it is. If I’m really missing that nice exhaust burble, I might seek a 2020 exhaust system or maybe Akrapovich. This is my daily driver though, so it’s going to have to be really bad to persuade me to go through all that effort. We’ll see…

Thanks for the pictures. The exhaust looks exactly the same as this exhaust that was removed from a 2018 wagon. I can't see anything physically different. Perhaps internal baffling on the mufflers? I guess if it sounds the same if I swap for the 2018 exhaust the difference could be in the downpipes. I could always hollow out the mufflers on one of the exhausts to see if I get the volume I am looking for. I know everyone is going to recommend downpipes but I really don't want to deal with smog issues in a few years.

I guess I'll be the first to figure this out. I'll keep you posted.

As we move forward to the EVs, facelift 21 sound has been muted big time! Just the natural evolution….reducing the sound pollution

Not in the US (yet). The EU regs require otto particulate filters and possibly other markets. It's the EU sound regs that got us in the US. They presumably didn't want to incur the cost to design/produce market-specific exhaust systems, so we get the same system everyone else does with no more raucous mode.
Here's an article on OPF's, and coincidentally they include one of the E63 pre-OPF/OPF exhaust comparison videos I've seen.

I believe this is what you need to do... cut into the resonator.
or replace all together.
On that note: I'm replace exhaust with cat back form Akrapovic. Akrapovic states it's the same part for 2020 and 2021.
Just a thought
