Current 911 thinking about E63S. Can you help?
Hey guys, I feel like the 911 is just a little small for me and what I use it for. Unfortunately with my commute, I don’t have much excitement…35-45mph city roads. So I just don’t get to rev out the 911 much and so there’s just not much excitement. I had a Panama (turbo s hybrid) before this and am thinking about going back. But found A nice new 2023 E63S and wanted to get your thoughts. Anyone have much experience with Porsches’ and how they compare to the E63S? Unfortunately, the car is 7 hours away and I don’t have any near me to test drive. So would appreciate your thoughts

I have 10,000 miles on a 2024 E63 and literally was just wondering what a Porsche would be like. My perception is Porsches are tighter and more visceral.
I just sold my 2016 E63S and it was more raw and connected compared to the 2023. I miss that a little bit.
Would love your input if you ever drive a newer E63

You're not gonna have more fun in an AMG doodling along at 35 mph. On the contrary, slow driving is kinda the least enjoyable part. The transmission needs some TLC in city traffic if you want it to be smooth. I love the MCT, but I don't commute at all. The PDK is smoother, but to me a bit clinical outside of the GT models. I like a bit of rawness in the transmission and more than one dimension.

The E63s is a great daily car where you have best of both worlds..pure luxury and very fast when you want it to be. Really depends on what you are looking for.
Is your 911 Turbo? If it isn't the E63s will pull a lot harder and will be faster.

thanks for your feedback. I have a ‘23 carrerra. So what would you do in that scenario? It is fast but doesn’t have the specialness of a turbo. Do you daily the 363s? How do they compare? Did you consider a Panamera?

I was thinking about the E63 vs the 700-900hp “wagon” Porsches and how more connected to the road they may feel. If I could tighten up the 2023 E63 a little it would be perfect. It’s a bit bloated feeling. I wish Sport+ mode changed the car like it did in the 2016 but it just doesn’t. It merely turns it into a louder (really nice) sofa whereas the 2016 it transformed more into a road feeling steering effort twitchy transmission gear hunting rev happy growling scrappy puppy dog chasing its own tail barking waiting excitedly for me to throw the ball (floor it).

@clemsondds it’s a brand and aesthetics thing.
If reliability matters to you, stick with Porsche. The MB V8 is showing itself to be typical MB unreliability.
I prefer Porsche brand appeal and aesthetics.
At the Panny Turbo and E63s level of performance, numbers really don’t matter. Get what you like.

I would still probably take the carrera over a e63s. I bought my e63 last year so I can take my 2 year old out without borrowing my wifes car and throw the stroller and car seat in with plenty of room. I daily drive both cars about equally the pdk is far superior in all driving conditions, reliability and build quality is also far superior on the 911. The 911 is also more fun to drive at lower speeds, the e63 is fun if you have an open highway/long straights. I didn’t consider the panamera since my plan was to do some mild modifications so I only considered the e63 and m5 for the aftermarket support.

E63s for daily is the best car you will need. Has both high performance like a supercar and room you need to haul your family in.

My understanding was Porsche discontinued the Sport Tourismo aka wagon body style in the US. Either way, I briefly looked at the ST prior to purchasing my E but ultimately decided against it for a number of reasons:
1) Cost - it's far more expensive
2) It's only marginally better performing despite the much higher cost (only the Turbo and Turbo SE Hybrid are better performing and cost > $80k).
3) Far less practical. I believe the boot space in the Porsche is around 17 cubic ft, which is less than half the E provides at 35 cubic ft. People usually buy wagons for practicality. Why buy a less practical wagon unless you truly just want the form factor despite being far less practical?
4) This article below speaks to the strength of the E despite coming up a close second to a far more expensive car.

How has the car held up mechanically? I’ve read a few comments to here and there that Mercedes has slipped the last few years in reliability. I’ve had Porsches for the last several years and haven’t had any issues. But we had a Mercedes several years ago and I remember I loved their service departments. Also, how do you normally find yourself driving around town, in comfort cruising or sport plus?

57,000 miles on my wife's 2019 e63s wagon - mechanically it's been great. Tires, oil changes, and about to do brake pads. Suspension can be a bit jarring even in comfort mode. Wife keeps it in comfort mode, and she's never complained to me about the ride quality. I suppose it depends on what bothers you. If you've grown accustomed to firmer riding vehicles like after changing out springs or coil-overs or using poly bushings - then the ride of the AMG E probably won't disappoint you. If you're expecting to be isolated from the world around you with no sensory inputs (think big squishy wallow-y typical SUV's) then you'll hate it. Porsche has probably bridged the divide better between the responsiveness of a sporting suspension and the compliance of a luxury car.

Now is a good time to mention oil-vapor separator failures on the W213 4.0TTV8 engine, which has the collateral damage effect of failed rear main crankshaft oil seal. It is unknowable how widepsread this failure is, or to assign a probability that OVS + RMS will fail on an individual vehicle.
I would not own one of these MB 4.0TTV8s unless it was covered by original manufacturer's warranty, not a third party warranty.

I have had:
3x E63s wagons (2019, 2x 2021)
1x Panamera GTS Sport Turismo (2023)
1x 992 GTS (2022)
If the 911 is just too small, I would take the Panamera (limo or ST) over an E63s all day, every day. Its just way smoother and well built, imo. I was about to buy a 2023 E63 but then test drove the Panamera, I would never go back.

You realize the ST is a station wagon, right? It has more space than the Panamera sedan, but less space than the E63 wagon and far less space than an SUV like a Cayenne.

** edit. That does make it more 911esque I suppose coming back to OPs question.

How about sound? I’ve heard that the V8 in the Porsche products isn’t all that impressive sound wise. I can’t corroborate this myself. I also read that the Porsche is less emotional and more clinical, despite being the better all around performer. Any thoughts on that?
