Estimated Range

So I'm driving back from the eclipse viewing yesterday, and the low fuel warning came on, showing around 80 miles of range remaining. I was about 25 miles from the gas station I wanted to stop at. and a few miles later the low fuel came on for a 2nd time, and then the range went blank. At that point I stopped at the nearest gas station. It took 20 gallons on the nose, so presumably I had 1.1 gal remaining. My question is, is it normal for the range to disappear when it gets that low?

pretty sure nobody will ever try this and see.

In theory, your 1 gallon would still have about 10 miles or so for you to go, given the parameters (driving speed, loads, city or highway, road conditions, etc) of your driving situation could change in this small window, maybe the computer cannot give a realistic range to full empty.

For me, I always fill at just below 1/2 empty mark, given the car is a gas guzzler. that's just me, of course.

According to Owners manual, Total tank capacity is 80L or 21.1 US gallons. Out of that, 12L or 3.2 US gallons would be treated as reserve. It may mean, at 17.9 US gallons, the onboard reading of the fuel tank would already be showing as "empty" or "0" at this point.

Is anyone able to keep the 4 cylinder mode on? My only stays on for a very short period of time and when the icon goes away it is for no reason. I did not accelerate, decelerate, shift, or anything.

no guts, no glory.

the tank / readout is so nonlinear - the first half of the tank appears to be 14 gallons and the second half is 7....

I've never seen the readout blank - but agree that would have freaked me out enough to stop sooner than my planned stop.

Mine does same thing. When range disappears and it shows gas pump sign, I assume it's on the reserve but no clue how far that will go. But it seems to pop up after the range dips below 30mi.

I tried to go to 700km but like you after the system said I had 97km left, then all of a sudden the range disappeared and I chickened out. I still had 6l left in the 80l tank when I filled. When driving before disappearing range said 97km and I had gone 603km so 700km was theoretically possible see: https://mbworld.org/forums/w213-amg/...ml#post8873646

When it gets real low it stops reporting how many miles are left. My guess is it's all legal "BUT THE CAR SAID THERE WAS 20KM LEFT AND THEN IT LEFT ME STRANDED AFTER 8KM - YOU NEED TO FIX MY LIFE NOW!" so MB just took the option away down low.

As others have reported, the range goes blank once it's low enough. Haven't tried it myself, but have heard before that that's what happens. Once you are running on fumes, the range estimate is largely worthless. An unexpected WOT and the tank is empty. The low fuel light comes on quite early in AMGs. Earlier than any other car I've ever owned. I'm guessing that's for a reason. Probably the added risk of fuel starvation in corners. As mentioned, I never really let it go that low. I've had the low fuel light come on maybe a couple of times moments before I got to the gas station, but I never ran it almost dry. Usually I fill at a 1/4 tank the latest.

Hope you enjoyed the solar eclipse. I was viewing it in Indiana and despite the weather forecast predicting clouds, we had blue sky the entire day.

Yes, the eclipse was awesome. We got up to Colebrook, New Hampshire. Perfect weather there, too.

Yes. When the level gets very low, it just shows a gas pump rather than a numerical range. There are too many variables and the estimate would be unusably noisy at that point.

That's part of the Comfort ECO mode. ECO mode has 3 things it does - start/stop, 4cyl, and sailing. Many don't like the start/stop and turn off ECO, but that turns off the others too. All of these are automatically activated. Start/Stop happens when you come to a halt and the battery is charged, engine is warm, A/C off or light load, etc. 4cyl is when you're in a very light load (maybe zero load) and I think it only happens above a certain speed. Sailing is when you're at a higher speed (IDK how high, I've seen it @ approx 60mph) and coasting. To initiate it you accelerate slightly and then immediately lift the throttle completely. Both 4cyl and sailing turn off as soon as you give it some gas (or maybe even move the throttle pedal even slightly?).
