“the E63 is dead” Ola Kallenius AMG Boss
Car Magazine article about the E53 published yeatersay says the E63 is apparently dead. . .
“The King is dead. Long live the…prince? The underling? The underling, in this case, being the Mercedes-AMG E53. You see, the E53 was always a second-tier AMG E-Class; the supreme leader was always the E63. But – tissues at the ready – the E63 is, indeed, dead.It is an ex-AMG, at least according to Mercedes’ big boss, Ola Källenius. He came straight out and said that V8 thunder in an E-Class no longer sits well with the brand’s shift towards hybrid and electrified powertrains.”

It was already hinted when the new E53 came out that the E63 was no more. The new E53 basically has almost the same performance as the W213 E63. Surprisingly I kinda like the formula for this kind of car. It's a different hybrid powertrain from the P3 Hybrid powertrain in the other E Performance models. The package kinda makes sense in the midsize sedan. I watched the RBR First Drive. He likes it quite a bit. Most people who bought an E63 mainly daily drove it on their commute and such and complained about the transmission. This E53 makes a lot of sense for that kind of use. I never really saw the E63 as a sports car and most people eschewed things like the performance seats. Question is are they gonna keep the GT 63 4-door, but the CLS 63 and E 63 are basically history. There was way too much overlap and the coupe, which technically is the sportier trim didn't even have a 63 anymore.

The E doesn't compete with the M3. The E63 competes with the M5.

Is this just rumour? To me it feels like they dumped the V8, then said they'd bring it back, and now they're saying no more V8 or E63? I'm confused.

Or, on the flipside, a C is really just a RWD E63s with a downtune and a bit lighter and smaller (I'm just being a smartass). Still fantastic though (both models), you're absolutely right.

My thoughts is that they think enthusiasts who want the V8 will be interested in coupe or cabriolet (if the CLE 63 end up getting the V8 in the first place after all that still a rumour but it has more truth to it) while the E sedan is more like an executive sedan and family sedan, that sort of thing, obviously I am wrong and I hope I am wrong.
That said, the E 63 gone is still a rumour. How well did the E 63 did in sales anyways in North America, what about Europe and Asia? I understand North America likes SUVs hence the phasing out of sedans by automakers like Ford but what about other countries?
If they keep the AMG GT four door like forum member superswiss discussed about, that is technically an W213 E 63 but looks better (in my opinion), is a sedan but with a higher price tag, so if they do get rid of the E 63, there is still that, although it won't get the changes from the W214 unless they come up with a new generation, they can also use that as a way to upsell customers.

Nothing really new here about the V8 being axed for the E Class. As far as E63 designation potentially going away well they can still use E63 with the new 6 cylinder hybrid and still say the "Final Edition" E63 V8 was of last generation. Or they can simply bring back the E55 moniker for the top of the range AMG E Class with the E53 slotting nicely below it both using the hybrid 6 cylinder motors

E63 is the king of the road.
On positive side, with short supply resale value should go up!

That said, there is no hand built inline-6 and depending on if they ceased development or not they aren't coming up with a hand-built inline-6 anytime soon/at all. I don't think it is a good idea to not have a hand-built, OMOE in a 63 vehicle, that might also be a reason why they want to kill E 63 altogether, they know they can't be putting the M139 in there.

Yeah, but those are important differences. Weight hurts performance. The E isn't a nimble canyon carver. Too big, wheel base too long,, not nearly as dynamic. Sports cars don't have 4 doors, either. It's a family saloon, not a car I'd want to take on a technical road. AWD also takes out some of the fun. Don't need that. At all the AMG driving events I attended, the E63 was never used for dynamic driving. We only did braking exercises in the paddock area with it and they used it to demonstrate the parking assist...LOL. For the dynamic exercises such as drifting, autocross and track, they used the smaller, nimbler and sportier models. C63S coupe for drifting, CLA/A for autocross and the GTs for track. One exception is the GT 4-door we used on the track as well, but it has rear wheel steering which shortens the wheel base and it has a stiffer chassis than the E, so more suited for dynamic driving. The E63 is a great straight line German Autobahn rocket, but that's not really applicable outside of Germany.

Yes, for the current generation. The GT 63 SE has been out for something like over two years elsewhere. It's just finally coming to North America. I drove this thing back in 2022 in Germany. Worse than the E63S, though. Way too heavy. We hauled it around the Nürburgring, but it wanted to fly off the track in every corner due to all the additional weight. Goes to show that power isn't everything. The regular GT 63S was faster around the track.

On another note: Each and every AMG performance school has E63 in drag races! The EQS AMG could not keep up with E63 because of the stopping distance. Too heavy. Like riding on a whale!

It is pleasure and great fun on the autobahn (made over 6k miles in Europe) and a perfect car here in the US. It’s like getting two cars for the price of one: executive sedan and sports car all in one!

My point was, the E is just as fun to drive as the C. you really lose nothing in terms of the subjectivity of "lightness of performance" in the E.
Weight is easily managed by increasing lateral grip - lap times of all modern cars prove this.
Dynamically, the E's limits are so high, if you're hitting them on public roads you are probably better off in a Miata anyway.

Correction: E63 can do anything C63 can, including the drift mode. It is only faster and roomier, which of course C63 cannot match.

Anyway, there's a lot that goes into it. The E lacks the looks for me, too. No wider rear fenders and such. Too me it just looks a bit too bland for the performance. I know some people like understated, but there's something to be said if traditionally understated Audi makes a more badass looking wagon with the RS6 than AMG did with the E63 wagon.
FWIW, during my first AMG Driving Academy event we asked our instructor who has been doing this for decades which AMG he likes the best. His answer was they are all great, but for outright fun the C63 can't be beat. It's just a great useable grand tourer with the proper front engine RWD formula and plenty of room if you don't have a family. Most of the time I'm by myself, why would I wanna compromise with a larger 4-door sedan? Sports cars are not family cars by definition, but we gonna have to agree to disagree on this topic. I simply said the E is not a sports car to me and doesn't make me lust after it.

Entirely depends on your perspective. I don't subscribe to the bigger is better mentality. Roomier is not a desirable attribute of a sports car. It's supposed to be low, with a low roofline, short wheel base and wide track. Roomier is the exact opposite of that. Seating position is too high etc. I've driven almost all recent AMGs over the last 5 years, all the way up to the GT BS, so I'm well aware of how they compare. The C coupe is simply more playful and more fun. Yes, the E has drift mode, but you have to turn off all the safety systems to get it, so it's not something for the public road. In the C you can have RWD fun at all times and gradually dial in the level of safety you want thanks to the 9-stage traction control system in the FL. Spinning the wheels is fun and engaging to make most of the available traction. I've had my share of AWD performance cars. They are just not as much fun, because it's too easy to drive them fast. I need to respect a car and I need it to make me work to truly enjoy it. Stomp and go is not my thing. It's also why I mostly drive in manual mode.

It’s important to agree we all make our own choices and people should respect that.

Nobody disrespected your choice. All we are talking about is the perception of the cars and that RWD coupes are inherently more sporty.
