Question to those who have had a roof rack for their E63 estates. When I was heading out for skiing a few weeks ago, I was installing the rack and noticed that it has a pictorial warning not to exceed 80 mph. I ended up throwing the skis inside the car instead of using the box because I was worried (rightfully so) that I might occasionally exceed 80 on my 4 hour drive. Has anyone lost a rack to wind? Have others exceeded 80 mph with a rack and box combo?
I suspect that it has to do with the strength of the anchors. My EQS says something like “No roof rack” when I’m in Sport mode.
I have, however been up to around 110-115 mph once with a bike up once in an old BMW M5 and the bike stayed put but the gutter-mounted rack was pretty solid. Beat the Merc 500E too.
This was a large reason why I did not bother getting a roof rack. Even the AMG one says "130 kph". That is below cruising speed the average public does here on the 407.
