I may never open my sun roof again after reading this . . .

 

I was thinking the same, I have not touched mine since testing functionality when I purchased the car. Not sure if its better to exercise it once in a while or just leave it alone..

 

I have a sneaky suspicion that the sunroof area wasn’t engineered well enough to prevent excessive flexing and bending of the sunroof area, causing metal fatigue.

 

if you have a decent relationship with your service advisor and that dealership, particularly if you bought the car from that dealership, you can always just start with the service advisor and ask him if he would just call his upper management to see if he could find out if this was eligible for Goodwill given your loyalty to the dealership.

All you can do is ask in the next step you can do that I've seen other people do and which helped me get a buyback on my 2014 Mercedes was just to call MBUSA and ask simply that you want a Goodwill adjustment to the bill that you just paid.

unlikely, sure. But it's about 10 minutes out of your life and it could recoup some of the cash, but it's your time and obviously entirely up to you.

 

look at the thousands of posts about panoramic roof, creaking, and all the expenses that it occurs after the warranty. To repair that. Fortunately, there are YouTube videos to show how to safely drop the headliner to take care of this yourself with a little bit of elbow, grease, and Loctite.

 

tilt is more than enough for me. I never need the thing open all the way, windows down and tilt and we are golden

 

as I've been looking at the sunroof fairly close up trying to determine the situation and what could have failed, I've noticed a fair amount of plastic pieces that would have a fairly significant & very frequent heavy load on it, making me wonder why those aren't manufactured in aluminum or something else capable of withstanding a bit more load, weight, moving action . . . likely weight saving measures but its not like the car is a featherweight to begin with . . .

 

maybe you can add the task of lubrication of the sunroof to the next service visit therefore, if it gets stuck when they do it, maybe you can blame it on the dealer?

 

in addition to tensile strength of a particular material, I'm sure they had to consider that vast temperature changes that the sunroof goes through exposed to sun that exposed to the elements in winter, and had to consider expansion contraction principles when identifying the optimal material to make some of those parts.

Certainly, yes this could be a cost cutting measure, but what you're describing in the
W-213 AMG is just not a very commonly reported problem on this forum or the non AMG 213 forum

maybe we are just back to bad luck.

 

I have rarely opened the sun roof, but I will say that I was pleasantly surprised one nice day when leaving my office. Opened all the windows and sun roof before I pulled away from the office. Had one of my co-workers riding along who was interested in the car. Had dropped it into Race mode and then gave it a good romp as we pulled away towards the next light. My car has the extra sound reduction option so I don't get as much feedback from the performance exhaust, but this time - oh man, that was loud and nasty with snap and crackles when I let off and coasted towards the light.

But I rarely drive along with the windows or roof open otherwise. Still, it's a paid for feature and one would like to think you can use it as often as you desire without worry of breakage.

 

 

Latest update: got her back home and what they found was the left and right panoramic roof rails had a broken mechanical actuator and were binding, the motor needed replacement too due to excessive wear from binding so that was all replaced:

I inquired about Goodwill and was explained that given the cars age and mileage that is not really an option, however they were able to give me a small 'discount' bringing the total down a bit compared to the original quote . . . there's also a 2 year warranty on parts and labor since it has been performed by an official dealer which will reduce the worry a bit for the near future . . .

When you mention noice cancelling function, it's goes off with the windows open, FYI. So you get the pleasure of hearing that fantastic exhaust in full effect I get excited every spring when I can "open the car up" and hear those amazing sounds!!

 

The car has option PAF which is Acoustic Comfort Package: Increased Cabin Insulation, Windshield and Side Windows with Acoustic and Heat Absorbing Membrane and Infrared Glass.It isn't an active feature that gets enabled/disabled based on window position, though certainly lowering the windows reduces the effectiveness of the acoustic glass :-)

I'm unaware of any active noise cancellation feature on the car, certainly there wasn't any optional feature for that on my 2018 year model.

 

Initial reviews of the car all mentioned piped-in engine noise, sort of the opposite of noise cancellation. But there was never any follow-up discussion so I assume someone at the factory was misinformed,

I found out about this feature on my 18 S63 while troubleshooting a speaker that wasn't playing. I drove the car for one day with the amplifier disconnected and was shocked at the difference in noise levels in the car. It's basically noise cancelling headphones for the car, and it made a huge difference in my case. I'm not an audiophile and I had no idea this was a feature until I experienced the difference. No way to disable it other than removing the amplifier, or maybe the fuse, AFAIK.

 

No such option (97B) shows up in the DOG for the 2018 E63s. Similarly it is not on my order confirmation sheet. Searching for noise in the DOG does not bring up any matching entries and I searched using other potential terms. Not a feature in the 2018 E63s as best I can tell.

 

My 2020 with the acoustic comfort package does not have that 97B on the build sheet either. Just a guess but active noise cancelling may have been reserved for S class.
