Replacement Tire Question

One tire on my E430 is busted (G'Year Eagle F1 GS-D2; 235/45-17) - nail right where the sidewall meets the contact patch. It's definitely not repairable, according to local G'Year pals. I plan to get a replacement today. The others have 17K on them. Of course, it's better to get two, but can I get away with just replacing the bad tire, continue my normal rotation pattern and duration and hope all will be fine?

It was either Autoweek or Car and Driver that had an article about this situation recently. When just replacing one or two tires, make sure the replacement(s) go on the rear axle. This is regardless of the original location of the tire to be replaced. This is for control purposes. The article didn't make mention of how to handle rotations. I would imagine that, as long as the new tire has substantially more tread, you would change it from one side of the rear axle to the other. Hope this helps.

depends on the weather
in-order to properly answer your question I would need to know what is the tread depth of the remaining tires

Darkmann, I would try a Used Tire Shop. Some have 'guaranteed' used tires and you may find the same model. Shop Around. Ride that for a couple of months and then get a new set. Some used tires can be very good and even better or more tread than the other 3. Good Luck.

Oh, I tried and I've been riding on this nail for a while now. It's just getting uncomfortable to constantly put air in it and not knowing when it'll go flat on me. Unfortunately I couldn't find any here in Salisbury. Anyway, yesterday I ordered one from The Rack and they got in today. Tomorrow, the bad one will get replaced. I'll ask them to use the tire on the spare rim as a normal tire with the new one at the rears and then my spare will be the good one w/out the nail. That'll work fine 'cause I'm on a road trip to Philli on Saturday.

Thanks Luke, I did get the new tire put on today. What I did was use the full size spare and the new tire on the rear - so I have two new tires on the rear - and used the one good one that was taken off the rear and made it my spare . Worked out OK. BTW, as usual, The Rack did a great job - got my tire the next day after my order, shipped from DE to MD. That was quick. Unfortunately, the shop dinged my rim in the mounting process, but they have a new one on order, so I'll have to get this done all over again in a few days. But, they were extremely appologetic about the whole thing. While I'm on a roll here, what's the largest tire I can mount on stock '02 ML320?? Specifically, will the '02 ML430 tires mount on the '02 ML320 rims without mods??
