Replacement Tires for '03 S55. Slim pickings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time to replace the Bridgestone Potenza RE050 original tires on my '03. These are supposedly the extra load tires.

The '03 OE tires are specified as:
Front: 245/45ZR18 (100Y XL, 800kg/1764# @50psi)
Rear: 265/40ZR18 (101Y XL, 825kg/1819# @ 50psi).

For these exact sizes/specs, I have found the following info:

Bridgestone's own selection guide on its website says that current Potenza RE050 is not available for my car. Hmmm. Seems strange. I can find a spec sheet that shows my tires, but that could be history.

Michelin shows Pilot Sport.

Goodyear has nothing to match the ratings in these sizes.

Pirelli's selector has nothing. (no Y100/Y101 load factor ratings.

Toyo's Proxes don't have the Y100/Y101 Load Factor ratings

TireRack recommends the lower-rated load factor Potenza RE 050 product.

What are you folks using now on your S55 (2003 or later)?

Can you still get the Y100/Y101 rated Potenza RE050's?

I can see your website shows both the Potenza RE050's and the Mich Pilot Sports. But it shows only the Service Descriptions 97Y fr / 96Y for those manufacturers.

The S is a heavy car. And I do want the best.

I am still curious as to why Bridgestone doesn't show the 101Y/101Y ratings available in their online selection guide.

Here's what TireRack's site gave me below:

Bridgestone Potenza RE050

A little improvement since last week.

Thanks, Luke.

I would want to get 100Y/101Y service rating, which was O.E. on my car.

Your website selector seems to have been updated since my last post. The proposed RE050 front 245/45YR18 still doesn't have a 100Y service rating. But at least you have added the proposed rear 265/40ZR18 101Y to the pick list since my last post. And I presume I can buy it since it's in stock.

Here's what your site offers now for the 2003 S55:

(Bridgestone RE050)

Front: 245/45YR18
Serv. Desc: 96Y
Price: $219.00
Estimated Availability: In Stock Front:
012345678

Rear: 265/40YR18
Serv. Desc: 101Y
Load Rating: XL
Price: $245.00
Estimated Availability: In Stock

(RE050 Run Flats..I'm not interested. not 100Y/101Y....)

(Michelin Pilot Sport....still no 100Y or 101Y ratings.)

Front: 245/45YR18
Serv. Desc: 96Y
Price: $249.00
Estimated Availability: In Stock Front:
012345678

Rear: 265/40YR18
Serv. Desc: 97Y
Price: $306.00
Estimated Availability: In Stock

Tires for S55

I had the same problem with my CL55. After a lot of research, I found that the 255/40/18 PS2's for the front were close enough in diameter to work. The original size of the rear, 265/40/18, obviously work. Could not be happier with them. Much quieter and somewhat more compliant ride.
