E55 winter set up

My dealer is telling me that they put 17" wheels/snows on their 2005 E55s and he wants to sell me a set. He claims that they are the "Tire Rack recommended size" But when I go to TR site it tells me 18". Can you use 17s? What are the pros/cons?

Thanks

Your dealer is full of it. The 17" won't clear the front calipers. Go with the tire rack recommendation - I did 2 years ago without problem. 18" wheels (at that time only the AMG's were available) and Dunlop Wintersports. They'll be going back on the car in a week or so.

Thanks Eddie. So, how does the E55 go through snow w/ the dunlops. I used to have a BMW 540 that was unbelievably good with the dunlop snows. But, I'm figuring the huge torque of the E55 may make it a bit squirrely when slick

depends on the weather
there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a 17" wheel will fit a W211 E55 ........ call your dealerships bluff and tell them you will buy them but if they do not fit you want a refund and a free set of 18" wheels and tires

That was my fear, I had gone from a CLK 430 to the E. I must say I have had absolutely no problem for the past 2 NYC winters. Obviously you need to know how to drive in snow, but I leave her in winter mode if the road is slick and take it easy. The car is my daily driver and I use it every day commuting from Westchester (north of NYC) into the city.

Thanks Luke - good suggestion -- I like your attitude!
Question - are there any other AMG cars that I can assume the 18" wheels will fit on the W211 E55? I'm seeing lots of OEM wheels from C class, S class and I'm just assuming they won't fit. Any way for me to tell without bothering you - I know nothing about offsets or lug patterns and can't find that info for E55.
By the way, love the Tire Rack and have got several winter sets over the years. I really want OEM for winter, however, and the price from TR is killing me.

Hey Eddie
Good to hear. But, what is "winter mode." I'm getting an '05 and I don't believe it has winter mode - it has the three suspension settings, height setting, and tranny (reg, manual, sport), but nothing I see as "winter" Is it different on '04

Thanks

Eddie - hows the phone?

And, yet another question (off topic) for you Eddie - how do you like hands-free. Its the one option the car I'm about to close on does not have that I think I would like. Its an awful expensive dealer install (close to 3K) and it would have to work perfectly to be worth it to me. Your thoughts would be appreciated -- does the phone itself suck as much as people claim?

Tire Rack is WAY Better Than Dealer

Sorry Luke - TR is always WAY, WAY better price than dealer. And, way better customer service. Didnt mean to imply otherwise - I figured everybody knew that.

Will these SL500 wheels fit without modification or problem on E55 (2005):

Wheel Specifications: Diameter: 18" Front Rim Width: 8.5" Front Offset: ET30 Rear Rim Width: 9.5" Rear Offset: ET33 Bolt pattern: 5 x 112

By winter mode I mean "C" or comfort - starts in 2nd gear. As far as the phone is concrned - yea it's pricy but very nice. Realize that mine is aan old V60 the newer phones probably are better. But as far as handsfree is concerned I think it cant be beat - th ephone rings and you see who's calling and you can decide to answer with the puch of a steering wheel button and then the radio (or whatever) will cut off. I had passed on it with my last car and regretted it, I will never not get it again.
