Are you lowered?

I'm gonna say 20s are the biggest without having to roll fenders.

Not lowered...but I'm looking for performance so I want to go a bit wider as opposed to taller, and would like to keep a little more lip-hence no bigger than 19's. I guess I'm looking to find out how wide I can go on all four corners...

If you want performance, then definately do not look into going bigger diameter wise. Go with 18s or at most, 19s.

I don't know about width, but I can take a gamble the W220 can fit a pair of 295s back there. That's probably max.

Try tirerack.com

Tirerack.com has a automated system that allows you to view the maximum recommend tire and wheel sizes for your vehicle. Hence, the original equipment size for the 06' S65 is (Rear: 275/35zr19; Front: 245/40zr19; Optional size: Rear: 285/30yr20; Front: 255/35yr20)

I would stick with the original equipment size and convert over to the Michelin PS2 (XL: Extra Load) tires. You will notice a significant difference in your vehicle's handling, ride comfort and longevity in dry and wet. Also, they are highly recommend by Merc. and Porsche owners. In fact, they're the original equipment tires for the McLaren SLR. However, you can't use them in freezing temperatures as is the case with most high-end max performance tires!

P.S : If you decide to go with a wheel/tire combo, stick with a high quality forged alloy rim such those offered by Brabus, BBS or OZ. The advantages are less unsprung weight, superior ride quality, and strength.

Thanks for the advice-yes, up to speed on all thee degradation that comes from additional weight, etc.

I guess I'll have to hunt for a decent tire that will allow the car to apply the power, but was still limited by the max one could squeeze out back. I was hoping an 18 or 19 x11 inch rim would fit properly...

2003 S600....Naked
You can run 22's on the 2007 S class. 22X8.5 Front and 22x9.5 Rear as long as the offset stays high...ie in the 40 to 45 range. Run a 255/30/22 front and a 285/25/22 rear. The tire availablility is going to be the problem. Try the new Falken 452's they are very nice. Just my 2 cents Check out the EXE S550 in all the magazine adds...lowered, Fabulous Body kit, and 22's.

Those 452's are hard to get. I tried everywhere and no one had sizes in over 19 inches. I ended up going with Conti Sport Contact 3's because they were in stock.

I recently spotted an SL55 with 305's out back-maybe 20's...

Personally, 19 inches is as tall as I want to go, and I am looking for max performance over looks...I am concerned about the ride degrading with taller tires...

OK...my experience is as follows: I changed from 225/55 x 17 (stock) to 245/35 x 20 XL. The rim width on the 17" was 8"...the 20" are 8.5". The Static Loaded Radius which is the measurement from the ground/road to the center line of the wheel assembly is the same for both the 17" and the 20". This is because of the aspect ratio (55 vs. 35) difference. The most notable difference in ride and handling are that the ride is about 30% rougher even though the Airmatic in the S class makes it less obvious. You feel more of the pavement imperfections with the 20" vs the 17". Cornering and steering response is about 50% better with the 20" vs the 17". Overall lateral stability is improved dramatically. There seems to be less "float" at high speeds as opposed to the stock set up. I did not weigh the 20" assembly vs. the 17" but lifting one vs. the other gives an obvious advantage in unsprung weight to the 20" assembly (lighter). Since there is less unsprung weight, the car feels quicker...the acceleration seems to be snappier. There is more road noise from the 20" tires vs. the 17"....however it's not as loud as the Continental Sport Contacts I had on a BMW 540I. There is no speedometer error as verified by a Garmin GPS that I used to check before and after the change.

Hope this answers some of your questions. I had many of the same questions before I made my changes.

Thank you for the responses, but I really want to squeeze fatter tires, such as a 295+ on a 19x 10.5 inch rim out back, with slightly larger than stock up front. I will make some calls at this point to the TR and see what they have to say...
