Question for Luke

Hello Luke,

I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether the following wheels will likely fit without creating any problems:

SLR with 19" Turbine-style wheels
Front: 9J x 19 offset 46.5 with 255/35 ZR19 (96Y)
Rear: 11.5J x 19 offset 45mm with 295/30 ZR19 (100Y)

aftermarket candidate: Brabus Monoblock VI
Front: 9J x 20H2 offset 43 with 255/30/ZR20 92Y
Rear: 10.5J x 20H2 offset 48 with 305/25/ZR20 97Y

According to my calculations the OD will not change for the fronts and the rear will increase 1/25 of an inch; The inner clearance with this offset will apparently increase by 3mm on the front and 10mm on the back. I'm thinking the wider tire will make up for the fact the wheel will be retracted 16mm from the stock wheel (assuming these calculations are correct).

I realize Brabus has an SLR showcar with 11.5 x 19 rear wheels, but they've told me that was a prototype wheel and was never sold. Thanks in advance for your comments.

you have an SLR ????

pictures???

I would not recommend that Brabus set up though ... the 305 rear tire will have too much sidewall deflection and would actually hurt the handling of the car

Thanks for your comment. The car belongs to a friend and he asked me to check out this issue with the wheels. He occasionally lets others (like me) drive the car and wants a set of comparably inexpensive wheels for 'everyday' use, as a replacement for the turbine wheel is (we're told) $5K/6K each for front/rear.

The car wouldn't be driven hard with the Brabus wheels, and the switch wouldn't be designed to improve the performance of the car...the owner just wants to be sure the Brabus' won't cause any damage.

I don't have pictures posted online, I'll email you one. Thanks again!

I would think an SLR owner wouldn't be too concerned about the cost of a wheel. Kind of like the new President wondering if he should redo the upholestry in Air Force One in vinyl.
