Noisy Tires

I have a 2001 S500 Sport. Now with only 15,000 miles the front tires are quite noisy. They are the Dunlop 275 40 R 18.
Is there a quieter and mor comfortable riding tire than this one that I could put on this car?
Thank you.
Steve

The dunlop's aren't bad and are not generally that noisy (assuming SP9K's). The Michelin pilot sports are nice, but they are similar in noise levels. Since your car is already fairly quiet, if you're trying to achieve quiet, you shouldn't really be riding on 275-40/18's. You may want to look at downgrading to 17's. Generally the lower profile the tire, the more harsh in terms of ride and noise levels.

Thanks very much for the advice. If I downgrade to 17s can they go on the same rim?

No. Try as you might, a 17" tire will not fit on a 18" rim. . .

Sport packages, sport suspension and low profile tires do not provide comfort & quiet. They are designed to be driven hard and fast and provide stability in the turns. They are always more noisey and harsh compared to the standard tires. The standard tires and wheels on the S500 are 16 inchers.

That 275 /40R18 is the size of your rear tires. The front tires are smaller at a 245 width.

If I change the tires and rims to the "non-sport" format, ie 16s, does that create a problem with the suspension or any of the other systems in the car?

No changes are needed to the suspension. You may not like the look of the narrower tires like on the standard S500. Of course it is your choice. Good Luck

Steverock,

The best combination for confort and ride is 234/45/17 !!!
With your wheels + tires 245/40/18 and 275/40/18, you should have a better handling, nicer looking but you may pay for the confort. There are couple options:
1. If you plan to keep the wheels (18 inches), may be try 245/45/18 instead of 245/40/18.....

2. Adjusting the suspension. I guess with S500, you can adjust the suspension: soft, harsh, medium...

3. Keep the same size but switch to a different tires: Continental, Pirrelli.....

Good luck.

E55KEV,

Don't tell Fast Eddy but I just turn 2k on Friday November 08 2002.

I recommend the 245/45/18 for being a tad bit more comfortable, however, that size will not fit the rear wheel which is 18X9.5. Maybe you should invest in two additional 18X8.5 for the rear. Also use Grand Touring Tires like the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4.
