The Official Winter Tire thread ... all winter tire questions go here !!!
2006 CLS500
Stock Size - 255/40R18 Fronts and 285/35/18 Rears
I have a set of Dunlop Winter M2 in size 245/45/17. I have a few questions -
1. Can I use these tires? I think the wheel diameter is the same. Need to confirm.
2. What wheels can I use to mount these tires? Can you provide a link?
3. Would the TPMS sensors fit on these wheels?
Thanks.
#1.) 245/45-17 is the correct size but, Winter Sport M2's? How old are they?
#2.) I would go for the Sport Edition ST3

#3.) your car was available with 2 different TPMS systems. If you OE wheels have rubber valve stems that system doesn't use sensors it utilizes the ABS wheel speed sensor to calculate tire pressure. If your OE wheels have metal valve stems then you would need sensors and those wheels are designed to accept them.

I have a 2002 E55 that I am currently running 2005 and up SL500 Sport Wheels on so my lug bolts are different than stock. What wheel can and tire package can I run using the same lug bolts?
I also run a hella tpms system purchased from tire rack. Is it easy to switch between the sensors on different sets of tires?
this will take a bit more than 2 -3 sentences on a forum ... give me a call

what size are the extra forged wheels?
are those the wheels you want to use for winter?
are they staggered wheels if so, what widths

I bought from TireRack my last 2 sets of tires (winter & all season) and I'm getting ready to buy again. But I'd like to go narrow if possible.
I have 2005 E500 4matic.
Original size 245-45-17
I would love to go down to 16in, but I don't think that's an option for E500.
If I stay with 17in, can I go narrower, and what would be the right size.
Thanks
16's will not clear the brakes ...
you can go more narrow with a 225/50-17 size
Pilot Alpin PA3's offer good winter grip and nice ride quality

Ride quality and performance is outstanding with this package. Here in Northern New Jersey it is absolutely STUPID to risk your life and car by driving on extreme performance summer tires like the Pirelli P-Zero. The Rial wheels-though quite reasonably priced are nicely made. There were no issues with the TPMS recommended by TireRack.
These tires are quiet, comfortable. They also offer a surprising amount of Dry road grip and have been fantastic in the rain. It has yet to snow significantly here, but I had Dunlop Winter Sports on my Porsche 996 C2 and when the weather was bad getting stuck was not an issue.
I've purchased 3 sets of winter tires and wheels from TireRack with ZERO problems.

There is not a winter tire option available in those sizes so, I would recommend the Potenza RE960 from Bridgestone

make: Mercedes-Benz
model: ML350 4Matic w/standard suspension (Canadian)
currently has 19" 5 spoke wheels - rubber valve stems (therefore no tpms)
location: Edmonton, Alberta
tires only or winter package: winter package
It can get very icy up here more so than snowy. I'm looking for the best grip on the slippery stuff and bang for the buck. What do you recommend?
thanks !
in the OE size the Michelin Latitude Alpin will offer the best snow and ice traction. You could go down to a 17" wheel and tire package and get a set of Continental Extreme Winter COntact tires in a 235/65-17 size which would offer significantly better grip in wintery conditions

Same year and car except I am located in Washington DC so snow can be difficult to judge. This year the weather people have predicted between 20-50" of snow. Last year we only got 8". I am looking for your recommendation as I will also be carrying a newborn soon.
while you won't need the same type of grip as they do ion Canada you still need to get through your nasty weather ... take a look at the Michelin Latitude Alpin as well. It is probably a better choice for your area and offers the best winter traction available in the OE size

I needed 295/21/35 Winter Tires.
Thank you.
Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow would be the best choice

I am looking for the best traction/handling combination for this sub. Running stock wheels with 275/55-17 (stock) AW Yokohamas, this is the worst handling awd vehicle I have ever driven. Help!
Blizzak LM25's can fix your winter grip issues without any drama

Just an update since "Luke" appears to be AWOL. I spoke to 2 different people at TireRack and they recommended the same set up. As well I did a bit of research and came to the same conclusion. Bear in mind I want the grippiest tires out there and could care less about high speed performance. So I'm getting 235/65R17 Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 on the 17" Rial DF rim. The DM-V1 are only R speed rated as opposed to the H rating on my current tires...but I want more grip than performance as the roads here are always icy and I frequently travel to the mountains all at speeds well under 170km/h. Their predecessor was the DM-Z3 and it was generally regarded as the best studless SUV winter tire out there for extreme conditions. A few reviews out there and of course Bridgestone themselves consider the DM-V1 to be even better than the DM-Z3.
They should be arriving any day and I will update on their effectiveness once installed.
not AWOL just very busy ... sorry for my delayed response to your previous post ... we are having some availability issues with those tires at this time though.

Winter Sport 3D from Dunlop would be a good choice

What is the recommended tire pressure for these 235/65/17? 32 psi all around?

Thanks. Would there be any advantage to going with 16" ML320 wheels and tires? Seems like a narrower tread would help with winter traction. Also, what's the narrowest tire I can put on the stock 17x8.5 rims?
Thanks again,
Dave
narrower is better when it comes to deep snow but, you could just run 255/60-17 and save the cost of the additional wheels

17" rims. Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 235/65/17 on a 2010 ML350 42 psi
18" rims. Dunlop SP WinterSport 3D 225/40/18 on a 2008 C63 36 psi
sorry for the delayed response

Many time what independent dealers have in their system is incorrect so double check.
The Blizzaks are better in the snow and ice while the Continental is marginally better on dry roads

no 42 is not too high ... I find most prefer to raise the pressure to reduce some of the sidewall deflection when downsizing the wheels
Last edited by Luke@tirerack; Dec 17, 2009 at 08:06 AM.
and I want to know if I can use my 17" snow tires/wheels on it this winter that I bought from TireRack for my 2000 E430 4-matic.
Thanks.
yes 17's will work on the new car

Also, thanks for the hub rings, i got them.
we have many 17" wheels which fit you car without issue and we also recommend using 225/45-17 on all four corners for winter

225 /45 R17
Good-Year ultra grip performance
or
Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3 ?
very near results from TireRack !
I prefer the Primacy Alpin over the Ultra-grip from Goodyear
