Proper Tire pressure - larger diameter wheels
I have a 2007 SL550. I replaced the original wheels and tires with new, larger ones. The newer tires have shorter sidewalls as well. What tire pressure should I use? Should I go with the car's recommended 30/33psi front/rear, or something else? I already hit a pothole and pinched the sidewall on one of the front tires which I need to replace. Could this be due to tire pressure that was too low?
Original Tires - Michelin Pilot Sport
front 255/40-18
rear 285/35-18
New Tires - Continental Extreme Contact DWS
front 245/35-20
rear 275/30-20
Also, the recommended tire pressure on my gas cap door is 33psi rear and 30psi front. The tires have a max pressure of 51psi listed on the sidewall. Am I correct that I can use any pressure between the Mercedes recommendation and the tire manufacturer's maximum pressure?

Not necessarily. Its most likely due to the fact that you do not have enough 'meat' on the sidewall. Thats one of the pitfalls with going with a 'rubber band' set up - bigger wheels, shorter sidewall.
