Have you painted your Calipers?

My calipers are a dull metal with specs of rust on it and it looks lame under my 17" alloy rims. My '99 black E430 deserves better. Why didn't Mercedes think of this like Porsche did. I bought black and red caliper spray but want to survey the group as to the preferred color on a black car.

It's the Sport E430 so red is sporty but it's all black and black on black looks good too.

Let me hear from by fello "benzr's"

I am also interested in cleaning up and painting my calipers. If anyone can offer any tips and pics, they will be much appreciated!

depends on the weather
The G-2 Manufacturing Brake Caliper PaintSystem Set was developed to show off a vehicle’s brake components through open-spoke style alloy wheels. It can be used to give all of a vehicle’s stock brake calipers the look of expensive, painted, high performance calipers, as well as add color to rear drum brake-equipped vehicles. Easily applied as a brush-on, the PaintSystem Set is engineered for universal application on automotive brake calipers and drums, and will even help protect these vital brake components from potentially harmful oils, chemicals and rust.

The PaintSystem Sets are available in eight high-gloss, wear-resistant colors that can be selected to complement or contrast a vehicle’s primary and/or accent colors. Available colors include: Red, Yellow, Blue, Silver, Gold, Black, Purple, Green and White.

Our experience indicates that a PaintSystem Set provides sufficient materials to paint 4 brake calipers, or 2 brake calipers and 2 brake drums. However vehicles with large brake calipers on the front axle and large brake drums on the rear axle may require two complete PaintSystem Sets to assure adequate coverage.

I have done this 4 times. Blue on E55. Red on Sport Track front. Recommend the brush on instead of spray.

E55 KEV, nice job! I understand that you usually don't have to remove the caliper to do this on some cars but did you have to on the Benz? I am about to order it through Tirerack, thanks Luke, and I just want to be sure what I am getting in to. Thanks...

jimmydagreek,

You do not 'have' to remove the calipers or pads. It will be your choice. I wanted a more thorough look so I unbolted the calipers and removed the pads. Setup is the most time consuming part. You want to use masking tape even with the pads removed.

eurosport,

Thanks for the compliments!

Thumbs up NICE JOB

Excellent work E55 Kev. It's the little upgrades that are most impressive. Most people don't think of these details, which subsequently makes you stand out, bling, bling. Also Luke thanks for the lead for the caliper paint system.

Since we are on the subject of brakes, can you tell me generally how much installation of front brake pads will cost. I'm thinking of buying the EBC Greenstuff pads off Tire Rack's website for $89 and want to go to a local shop for install. Any info will help, thanks.

clco, you mentioned local shop! Where are you as I have a shop that I can recommend and you can call and ask about the brake pad install. I am also thinking about the EBC Greenstuff pads for my Benz.

Sorry clco but no I don't know of any in Miami. BTW I was just in Ft. Lauderdale and South Beach several weeks ago and I can't get enough of it. I have been out there about a dozen times in the last year and a half for work but I don't have my car there (obviously) so I don't know of any shops. I don't know if your are a "do-it yourselfer" or not but they aren't really hard to change out as long as your rotors are smooth. Much luck on your project!

I have had less than fair results with both the "Greenstuff & Redstuff" EBC pads on my E Class...chronic annoying squealing, despite following the simple bedding procedure and they emit as much dust as OEMs.

However to my surprise, the Axxis Metal Master pads have virtually very low dust and no sign of any squealing since their installation 2 months ago.

Just my 2 cents,
Richard

Hey Richard, where did you get the Axxis Metal Master pads? Can I buy them on-line?

Anyone else have any problems with the EBC Greenstuff pads and can anyone else give an opinion?

Thanks for the info. Richard! Have a good one...

I purchased the Axxis pads through www.brakewarehouse.com Contact info: Robert Mack 1.800.214.4034 (New York). However, they have a warehouse in City of Industry, therefore shipping is local & quick (next day).

Also, I do believe they have an application for your 1997 E420

Good Luck
Richard
