Switching SL55 Wheel Bolts to studs.

Is this possible to do?

I was thinking maybe buy some of these wheel studs. http://www.ezaccessory.com/category_s/173.htm

After that is done I can get a good set of black locking Lugs from here http://www.revolution247.com/coloure...s-57089-0.html

I have no idea if this is safe or probably a very bad idea. I seem to take wheels on and off a lot and the bolts are a pain.

depends on the weather
changing over to studs is quite common and poses no safety issues

Luke,

From what Ive seen there are 2 types of conversion kits. One where you get the stud pressed in to the Hub from behind (I dont think thats an option) and another version where you simply screw one side in exposing the studs for the wheel to sit on.

Ive seen these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-B...Q5fAccessories

How does the side that screws in to the hub keep tight though as it seems it would have no stopping point which is surely what makes it tight in the first place? Normal wheel bolts are only tight and stop going for ever in to the hub because the wheel provides the stopper?

you would want the screw in kind and they stay screwed into the rotors because when installing them you use loctite on the threads.

Yes, use red Loctite 271 on the studs, and they will have to be heated to be removed. It's a fairly simple process (use two lock nuts against each other to tighten the studs when you are installing them after putting Loctite on, then let them sit for a while before putting the rims back on, but not 24 hrs like some here have said). My wheels had been impact gunned back on by the shop that balanced mine, so I just had the shop I bought the studs from put them on, since I couldn't remove the lugbolts myself.

There are some pics in my gallery of the studs I used from Rogue Engineering.

It's critical not to screw them in too far, of course.

My RE studs have stops that only allow you to screw them in so far. I think that most have that kind of design.

thanks for the info guys. Ill be looking in to finding a kit for the SL that fits just right and doesnt allow you to screw them in too far. Also got to get hold of some red loctite!
