Tire Rack - Recommended Sizes

Hello Luke,

On the Tirerack website, for alternate or staggered 17" tire sizes for an 2000 E320, they are as follows:

235/45-17 front
255/40-17 rear

It would seem that the front has a marginally larger diameter. As you specified on the Benzworld forum, the SLK front tiresize is 225/45-17 which has is nearly the same diameter as the 255/40-17.

For a W210, will the slight differences in diameter adversely affect any computer functions, like ABS and/or traction control? Or will everything be okay?

Thanks,

Rob Lee

depends on the weather
I do not know why the web-site recommended the 235 front ... I certainly never do .... I will have somebody look into that ... i do think that the car would have a problem with the diameter differences

E-Class or SLK?

Whoa, what car/tire are we talking about? I don't see an error on the recommendation for a 2000 E-Class. 235/45/17 has always been the perfect tire size for a W210 E-Class. That tire size is OEM on the Sport Package from 97-2002 and the 17" wheel on the E430.

What does a SLK size of 225/45/17 have to do with the W210? The rear fitment on a SLK would be 245/40/17 not 255.

You are correct E55 KEV, the standard 235/45-17 size is listed on the tirerack.com recommended sizes when a single or non-staggered size is specified. You are correct again when the alternate or staggered sizes are specified:

Front 235/45-17
Rear 255/40-17

My original inquiry questioned the slight differences in diameter of the sizes above.

SLK and W210? On the benzworld.com forum, someone had asked about the 225/45-17 front wheels fitment. The matching rear size closest in diameter would be the 255/40-17, as Luke posted in his reply.

I only made reference to the SLK because of the similiar tire sizes posted.

I think I got my answer, if I want to use the recommended front size of 235/45-17, then a better rear match would be the 265/40-17 tire. Providing that the rim width and rear wheel offsets are correct.

I saw the SLK reference and posted before reading the entire post ..... oops ! .... for the e-class the 265 is a tight fit and the web-site is just being cautious ..... but, the 265 would be a better fit as far as a diameter match is concerned

The recommendation of 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 is found industry wide, even on the BMW 5-Series. The 265/40/17 is a better (perfect) fit height wise.
