Question Replace 6 year old tires?

My wife drives her always garaged and maintained '89 300se about 3000 miles/year for short around-town trips.

During 2 different services each tech indicated that her tires were more than 6 years old and should be replaced because they are a safety hazard.

I've been driving and maintaining our autos for many years and this is the first time I've heard such a comment.

The tires in question show some wear but the tread is not even worn down to near the wear bars.

Is this a ruse? Are the wear bars meaningless now, or has tire technology worsened so that the tires degrade more quickly.

It's not a ruse, in the current sense in that being safe now involves a constantly higher standard. The tire industry now recommends this level of scrutiny, as does nearly everything else. IMO if the tires are properly inflated and not driven at high speeds or heavy loads its safe for general use.
