Tire storage questions

I need some advice about tire storage. I've done a search and can't find any info on this subject. I live in Canada and run all season tires and winter tires. Both sets are mounted on alloy rims. How should I store them? I have limited space in my garage, so I have been storing them upright in a shed. I have seen tire racks for sale. The guy at the store selling the racks says I run the risk of flat spotting the tires.
Are tire racks necessary or is what I've been doing OK? Any advice would be appreciated.

I store mine lying flat on their backs stacked on top of each other 4 high. Been doing this for over 10 years with no problem so far. I bought some from tire rack and discount tire with round cardboard shipping discs that I put under between and over each tire.

Don't store them upright or they will indeed flatspot and become useless. Lay them down and stack them up like Mort is suggesting.

Thanks everyone in this thread. I was scared storing them, and was only going two high.. and rotating them routinely... lol.. seriously.
