JamE55, I am thinking about getting the NT-555. www.autoaddictions.com highly recommend them. I have not heard anything bad about them. Tire Rack does not sell them. Also sold at www.tires.com

I guess the Nitto's are a "conflict of interest" since they (TireRack) does not sell them. There are also other brands not sold by TR are:
Toyo (big with the Japanese Import crowd)
Falken
Vredestein
Maxxis

depends on the weather
The reason I did not include them on my list is because we have not tested them. I personally have had only 1 experience with the Nitto brand tires (a drag radial) and it was VERY BAD.

Nitto NT-555
I have the NT-555's on my E320 now and haven't had any problems at all. Traction is good although my torque ratings are lower than the E55 but so far, no bad comments from me. Good bang for the buck.

The Nitto Drag Radials don't really suck, you just can't underinflate them, I've seen some people put as little as 10 psi, with cars (camaros and trans ams) running mid 13's and spinning like nuts.
I have (currently trying to sell them) a couple I only used 7 times, I tried 15 psi they sucked, when I tried 23 psi they gripped very well, (no spinning at all on my 99 Vette) and managed to do 12.985 with a stock car lauching at 3000 rpm (this was a 6 speed).
I've also ran them on my Impala SS with hardly any spinning at 23 psi doing 1.9 sec 60' times and 12.7 on the 1/4 mile.
Then again the Kumhos 712 gripped just as good (if not better) at the track or on the street at 27 psi (if I went lower than this (eg, 23 psi) they would spin), this made me decide not to swap tire when going to the track because this was my everyday tire (kumhos), and that wasn't bad considering the weight of the SS
