tranny damage from 1/4" tire difference?

Read in the paper that if one drive side tire is as much as 1/4" larger than the other, it will damage your tranny. True? At 40K miles I put the spare on the rear/drivers and the rear/passenger side had an tire with 40K miles. The Benz mechanic said it would be OK- was he wrong? Thanks guys.

it may damage ur drivetrain if ur car was 4wd/awd... some older bevel gear systems are know to overheat...break down.. not as common, but may also throw an error at ur abs/tracs/stability program...

The worst effect should be

that the cruise control may not stay engaged.I've got about 30 miles of freeway to get to the dragstrip, and after I started using Drag Nittos noticed that it would kick off after a few seconds.
The Nittos are about 3/8" taller than the stock tires.

I have not heard of any damage but know that the ASR electronics may not like it.

Here was my experience:
I had a blow-out in Germany (rear tire) and the Mercedes dealer replaced the tire with a smaller size by mistake, which I didn't notice at first.

When I went onto the Autobahn ('88 560SEL), the car was continously braking (because the smaller wheel spins faster, the ASR thought that there was tire spinning which it tried to compensate).

I guess I ignored it to some extend as I could not detect any obvious issues with the car. It really felt more like there was an engine performance issues. When going faster than 120mph ASR shut itself off (including ABS and SRS) and the car drove normally.

This may not occur with newer cars with ESP anymore, but I thought it might be helpful to know...
