On my GTI VW it turns 8.5x before it's tight but on the Benz it's like 6.5x. Is
there a rule to how many turns is good (other than when it appears to be tight).
This is one of those things I really never know and thought I'd ask (mainly due
to spacers, non OEM rims etc). Thanks guys.

all stuff aside.. u should really get a torque wrench and find out what the torque is supposed to be for ur wheel bolts.

5.5 turns for 12mm lugs
7 turns for 14mm lugs

not enough and your lug bolts fall out; lose enough you lose a wheel.

too much and you can warp your rotors. I've done it on a Volvo. Bought a torque wrench after that. should have bought it before.

watch out for hub centric spacer rings. found out the hard way that you need to remove them when you remove a rim that uses them...

the depth of the threads engaging should be equal to or more than the diameter of the bolt... so for a 1/2-20 lug, you'd want 1/2" of thread engaged, so 6 revolutions or more. Lug bolts have the added consideration of possibly going in too far, but that is the rule of thumb that I have always gone by with studs and lugnuts.
