Stupid tire question about how to measure

Hello.

I was given a set of 4 wheels with my 2003 CLK w209 purchase. One of the 4 wheels has a tire on it. I have measured the wheels in cm's and came up with a diameter of the face as 44 cm. Two are 20 cm wide, and two are 22 cm wide.

By my rough calculations that makes these wheels 17"x7.5" and 17"x8.5". Fine.

But today I looked at the wheel with the tire on it and it is an R16. 225/50 I think.

Do I have 16" wheels or 17" wheels? Can you put an R16 on a 17" wheel?

I though thought the main diameter was measures at the maximum visible face. The side shown in the pic below.

Thank you

the diameter is where the tire BEAD sits not the OD of the flange so probably is a 16" wheel as flange (lip) could be 1/2" tall and 17 - (2 X 1/2) = 16"

Also if MB wheel it should have size embossed on inside.

Thank you! I never knew that.
