Wheel Confusion 4Matic

I recently picked up a new-to-me 2023 E450 4Matic Cabriolet. It came with 20" rims which I want to downsize to 18" for ride comfort. The confusion comes in because they came OEM staggered - 245/35/R20 fronts and 275/30/R20 rears. A lot of what I've read is that 4Matics should not be staggered. Confused because they came that way from the factory.

1. If I'm downsizing to 18" wheels, do I keep the stagger and go with the door jam listed 245/45R18 fronts and 275/40/R18 rears? Or do I square them off with what I would assume to be 245/45/r18 all around?

2. How do I know what size wheel to get? I know bolt pattern 5x112, but what width? 18 x ? Does the tire size determine the wheel width or does the wheel width determine the tire size? And what about offset measurement?

Ideally I'm looking for a "wheels for dummies" answer - I'd be happy with someone giving me wheel size dimensions and tire size. Thanks for your help!!

Staggered from factory for 4MATIC does not damage the drivetrain at all as low as the size difference is within limits, I forgot what was the limit, don't quote me maybe it was within 5%?

Staggered or squared is totally fine, you could probably go with the staggered oem 18 inch set (make sure calipers can be cleared) or go squared which the latter helps make tire rotation possible.

As for the offset and specs, here they are in this guide: https://mbworld.org/forums/attachmen...375d1665188559 posted by forum member Eaton, on page 9 you will find the information you need.

I have a Glk 350, original 19” rim, I went to 17” for the same reason you want, comfort , Tire Rack guided me . I had Michelin Premier and got the replacement, Cross Climate , with same overall tire diameter. Result IT SUCKS , ride is rougher than 8 yr old Michelins ! Tire rack said to bad we won’t take them back you mounted them ! Be careful, I think the issue was the new tires have more sidewall and it’s thicker . Michelin refused to tell me that measurement , tire rack said to bad . Do your research before paying for the new package . Good luck !

A question , is overall tire diameter greater with the factory tires ? I thought 4 matic demanded the same ? I think tire shops scam a million people every year by refusing to replace one tire on most every brand of All Wheel Dive vehicles by saying “ you must have all 4 the same size. Costco scammed me by refusing to replace one tire , all had well above minimum tread !

Dummy answer is to just call TireRack and let them handle it. Then, if you get it wrong (well, they get it wrong) - they fix it!

C238 E220d 4Matic Coupé - W176 A200d - W201 190E 1.8 Aut.
@mdooling2

I have a 220d 4Matic Coupé from 2017 (C238, R1EC) - and I got below from an authorised MB repairshop in reply to what "correct" tire and rim dimensions fits the 2017:

(A1 = front axel / A2 = rear axel)

zu 5: min. 4826*zu 7: min. 1422*Zu 35:

A1/A2 245/40 R19 98Y XL, 8Jx19 ET43;

A1/A2 245/45 R18 100Y XL, 8Jx18 ET43;

A1 245/35 R20 95Y XL, 8Jx20 ET43 / A2 275/30 R20 97Y XL, 9Jx20 ET53;

A1 245/40 R19 98Y XL, 8Jx19 ET43 / A2 275/35 R19 100Y XL, 9Jx19 ET53;

A1 245/45 R18 100Y XL, 8Jx18 ET43 / A2 275/40 R18 103Y XL, 9Jx18 ET53;

A1 245/45 R18 100Y XL, 8Jx18 ET43 / A2 275/40 R18 99Y, 9Jx18 ET53

Perhaps of assistance...

I’ll be doing the exact opposite. My 2019 E450 4MATIC Coupe came with 245/45-18 on all four corners. I just purchased (waiting to pickup) 245/35-20 for fronts and 275/30-20 for the rear. If you haven’t already bought your 18” wheels, I’d consider trading you, depending on where you’re located. I’m in Indianapolis. I’d put all-season tires on your MB Rims, and keep my aftermarket rims with performance tires.
