Jack Daniels Single Barrel Silver Select is my poison of choice, Crown Royal is 2nd. As for JW, I actually have preference for green then red over black. Tried a bottle of double black, not feeling it at all.

I would take any Johnnie over Jack all day long. Johnnie Red, Black, Gold or definitely Green or Blue. Way more interesting than JD without the sick sweetness that you can expect from Kentucky Whiskey.

Blue Label is very nice but not as a daily cocktail! Crown/rocks or Crown Black/rocks. If you're looking for somethig different then Greenore 8 or 15....

Johnnie Walker Blue is great, but hardly worth the money. I only buy it at duty-free shops.
A good bourbon that I can heartily recommend is Basil Hayden. Makers Mark is a good one as well.
Not a big JD fan.

Jack Daniels. Not the single barrel stuff either . The real McCoy. The other stuff doesn't have the bite.
JW and all the other Scotch's taste dusty to me. Love Bourbon and Canadian and American Rye and even Irish whiskey like Midleton but Johnnie doesn't do it for me.

Comparing a scotch vs. a Tennessee whiskey? Why? Then people throw in Bourbon's they like. This thread is all over the place.

Do you know Jack?
I used to say I did not like Scotch until I took the time to explore the spectrum of options and there are many. I am a fan of some of the Speysides and the good Highland single malts. A cheap blend that beats all of JW offerings is Monkey Shoulder at about $30/bottle. It is a blend of three Speysides and very smooth. But Dalmore 12 or 18 is a Highland single that beats them all. The nose is fruitcake and the taste is similar with a smooth long finish. Highland Park 12 is another. Not as fragrant as the Dalmore but with the addition of a slight smokey nose and a complexity not often found. HP Valkyrie is an award winning Highland offering that is more traditional. I think it is a blend and not a single malt but not sure. Jura 10 is an Isla single malt Scotch worthy of your notice also. It is a little more reserved than Dalmore and about half the price too. Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask finished is a nice specialty scotch and is a good one for a beginner to try who may not have the palate for some of the bolder bottles. It is friendly. Complex but not too much.
Being a KY native, I still prefer a good Bourbon most of the time. Good is a subjective thing and even a good one will taste different on different days depending on what you have been eating. Elijah Craig 12 Barrel Proof or the small batch blend if you cannot find the single barrel stuff is one of the best to me. It is a higher rye mashbill and has a bite but lots of the vanilla, cinnamon spice, and cotton candy nose and a nice big oaky finish. I never get tired of it. I have a bottle of their 18y Craig that is a little more harsh and oaky and like all of their line is very complex and layered. Makes Jack Daniels taste like watered down rotgut. For good cheap everyday Bourbon, Wild Turkey 101 or Rare Breed Barrel Proof is hard to beat. It is easy to find and will not break your bank. They have some more high end offerings all made from the same mashbill but aged longer or from selected locations in the rickhouse. Now just so you don't think me prejudiced against our Tennessee neighbors, some of them do know how to make great Whiskey. George Dickel makes a barrel select offering that is exquisite and sells for about half the price of a good Scotch or a top tier Bourbon and is very good. Finally, I will add that if the label calls it Bourbon and it is not from KY, then it is a lie. All bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. If it is from NY or TN or Canada or anywhere other than the good old Bluegrass State it is just Whiskey. It might be great whiskey and they may even claim to be bourbon in some cases and you may like it. But real bourbon is like real NY pizza. Often imitated but never duplicated. If you doubt me then ask a New Yorker about the best pizza.
Irish
If you doubt me, come to KY and spend a couple of days touring the Bourbon Trail and visiting the distilleries and enjoy some tastings. What you will learn is that #1) there is bourbon and then there is BOURBON and the difference is stunning. #2) Most of the distilleries rarely let the really good stuff go too far from home. The best bourbons I have ever acquired were all bought at the distillery. They ship some of the good stuff but never north of the Mason Dixon Line and it gets snapped up fast unless you are friends with your liquor store owner. I suspect that Scotch may be much the same way. We are planning a trip to Scotland to tour the region and taste their wares. Should be fun. Scotch is much more diverse than Bourbon since it is not locked into as rigid a recipe process and as such varies greatly by region.

Neither.....never got the taste for Scotch....and Bourbon gives me gout. A project director that I worked for was a Scot and loved his single malt.....result was that we frequently took our client (a major mining company that you all know) to whiskey appreciation evenings..........loads of expensive single malt.....still do not like it..
I've been a gin drinker since the colonial days and love the variety that is available these days.... 'Tanqueray 10' being my favourite.
