The car shown above is only talked about in hushed tones and whispers. It’s given a certain reverence, due to a glorious history that everyone knows about. It’s a car that strikes fear in some, and demands respect from all. This car is no laughing matter, unless you’re categorically insane and off your many meds. I speak, of course, of the Mercedes CLK GTR.

Now, for those that don’t know the history of the CLK GTR, it was a car that was built to dominate the GT1 class in racing. And out of the 22 races the car competed in, it won 17 times, took pole 17 times, and won the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championships both years it competed. But at the time, in order to comply with homologation rules, Mercedes had to build road cars that were a derivation of the racing car. So they built one of the most insane road cars ever.

Using a version of the race bred 6.9L V12, Mercedes only built 26 cars total. 20 of them were coupes, and the remaining six were roadsters. And now’s your chance to own one of these road-going racecars. Next month, Bonhams is set to auction this pristine 1999 edition of one of the much rarer roadster CLK GTRs. This particular one supposedly has less than four miles on the odometer. According to Bonhams, the car could potentially bring anywhere from $2.2-2.8 million dollars, so maybe it’s time you break open your piggy bank.
