Rattle on start up
Hi all...I have a 2004 E class with the 1.8 Kompressor engine fitted..It has done 135000 miles...When starting up I get a rattle from thre engine for about two seconds. then everything goes quiet and runs perfect...
Could this be just the timing chain tensioner waiting to get its hydraulic pressure up?
Is this normal for these engines to rattle on the start up for two seconds?
I would post on the E class forum but nobody has given me a reply..These engines seem to be alot more popular on the C class forum...
Regards...Keith

It is either the timing chain tensioner/timing chain until oil pressure comes up or a camshaft adjustor. It should not do this.
Replacement is the only answer. Benz had a bulletin out a long while back on the camshaft adjustor & how to sand off burrs to quieten it. In my experience it was never successful.
I would start with a new chain & tensioner. I know people who just tolerate the noise but having the chain slapping around increases wear on everything related.

The rattle that you have is quite normal with the M271 engine, I was told by MB when I complained about it (sounds like a diesel) that it is normal with the Kompressor has something to do with the secondary air injection -pollution controls etc. You will also notice that the car is quite sluggish for the first 30sec of driving after a cold start now matter the outside temp

That start up rattle is not normal. Quite a few suffer from it over their life however.
The rattle I'm talking about comes from the chain case on the front of the engine until the oil pressure comes up after the car has stood for a while. The minute full oil pressure is achieved it shuts up.
We have had quite a few C200's in our car fleet. Benz SA was able to cure the few that did this.

No - the rattle on start-up is NOT normal. The car sounding like a tractor when cold is very normal, partly due to the secondary air injection.
My car had the rattle on start-up in 2009. It was something to do with camshaft adjusters and fixed under warranty.
I pulled the paperwork for you and here is the transcript that maybe someone can completely decode:

Matt - funnily enough on my previous W202 Benz it was the cam adjuster making the noise. MBSA replaced the timing chain tensioner first & the noise came back. Then they did the burr removal procedure on the adjuster & the noise came back. Then they replaced the adjuster & all was quiet.
The noise was entirely dependent on how long the car had stood without starting. After an hour's standing during the day it was silent at restart. After standing overnight in a warm garage it always rattled for those few seconds until full oil pressure was achieved. This is an old problem that was experienced on pre Kompressor engines plus the M111 & M271. If oil had drained back to the sump due to the vehicle standing - it would rattle on startup.
You don't hear it inside the car with windows closed. In underground parking with the window open it was obvious. Standing in front of the car it was obvious. I used to park under our building which amplified the rattle.
