Map Update

There is a process for the manufacturer of the units to get the latest software and maps, and there is a process to get map updates into the service network so dealer's have access. I have 0 information on the inner-working of those things at MB, but those processes and tools needed for each process are surely different. Hence, they may not be available at the same time.

I just drove a loaner 2017 C300 today with COMAND MAP version 8.0 installed. The dealer told me that my current version 7.1 is the latest update that is available.

I just found out that there is now an update for version 7 available. I was at the dealer today for my third road hazard tire replacement. I asked them to check for a map update. There is an update, but I couldn't leave the car for another day so I rescheduled for the update. I don't, however, know the update version number. I'll have the update installed at my next service appointment.
Has anyone had a COMAND Map update newer than version 7?

Hello,
I bought a Garmin Map Pilot SD card from my local dealer, with 5.0 maps( 2015-2016 Europe) and 1.2 software. I manage to update the software to 8.0, but i'm not getting any updates to maps( it' saying that it's already up to date). The card was new, it's been around 30 days from first activation. The dealer doesn't know how to do the update, and they don't have any solution for updating.
Any ideas? Or where to ask for help?
Thanks !

I just got the map update for Comand. It took three trips to the dealer to get it right. I got the impression that I am the only person asking for it. I went from 5.1 to 7.0. Someone said 7.1 was out, but I didn't get it. They left a DVD case in the car, but it just had a thumb drive in it. For some reason, they keep opening the ash tray compartment when they attempt to do this.

Comments can be edited
I think that editing the original, incorrect comment is better. That way, the person who reads that first, incorrect comment doesn't have to stumble across the later correction, in order to receive the correct information.

I tried to edit the post, but it must be too old. The edit option wasn't available.

so what's the consensus on Garmin updates? Are they free with oem card?
I have Garmin, and my MB dealer told me after Service A that there are no free updates, and all I can do is buy another SD card with newer maps (ca $200).

Resurrecting old thread: 2017 Coupe, delivered in November with a late September 2016 build date. Current Nav version is v8.0 with 2016/2017 data.
My wife just bought a 2017 GLC with a March 2017 build date. Her data is v10.0 and 2017/2018 data.
Dealer states there is no update for my car yet, according to the update list from Mercedes dated 4/17. I am fairly certain I've seen folks getting upgraded data on the NTG5.2 platform with builds/vehicles older than mine.
Can someone confirm??

My wife's 17' GLC has v8.0 maps. I have a CPO 16' W205 with v 6.1 maps. Guessing I still get the free updates even though it's CPO?
Sounds like v10 is the most current version?
Also don't know if anyone can answer: wife's GLC will display distance to upcoming major roads or let you select destinations for navigation at upcoming exits. Is that a feature of newer map versions?

My car has been in for service one week ago.
Since i had an issue with selecting recent destinations by voice they updated the COMAND software.
In my car (2016 version) i had the list of exits already since the beginning.
This feature works only on highways but let's you select any of them as a new destination.
The only thing i see new with the latest software update is that the arrival time an total distance to go has now a permanent spot in the upper left corner.
Before i could only see this in the lower right corner when there was no announcement.
I did also ask for a map update but that seems not to have been done. I am still on V8.0 2016 Europe.
I will contact them again to get this fixed because it seems v10.0 is now the latest.

Lot's of enthusiastic posts here... for newer reader here ...
1. Please understand COMAND Nav requires dealer update using factory/USB sticks supplied to the dealer by Mercedes - and requires the service dept "unlock" the COMAND Nav system to overwrite the existing Nav software/map-data with the fresh "version" in the USB stick. I have not personally seen any "hack mods" to accomplish this update - fyi dealer's have POOR info from Mercedes - and dealers are NOT paid by Mercedes for the shop-time/personnel time to do COMAND Nav update.
2. Garmin SD Card can by owner updated on the internet using a SD card reader/writer connected to you PC or Mac
-----------------------------------------
1. COMAND updates are "free" for 3-years from original service date - not to exceed 1 update in a 6 month period - IF a fresh update has been sent by MB to the dealer.
YES - factory does implement new versions sooner - meaning it takes time for Mercedes to rollout fresh updates/USB-sticks etc to the dealer.
In effect there has been average one effective update each year.
The MB dealers now - recently received - tentative update/version schedule thru the end of the year.
2. Garmin SD Card - "technically" quotes 1 free update within 60 days from card purchase - in effect the web portal at this moment will update any valid Garmin SD card to a newer version if available. How long that "loophole" will stay in effect no one knows. ALWAYS when portal updating choose to "Backup Existing Version" and NEVER interrupt or pause the download/update process until done which can take several Hours.. Yes - the more authentic looking bootleg/3rd party SD cards from eBay "seem" to work - and will update on the web portal - who you buy the card from is important
--------------------------------------------
I would say it's the Nav companies that mop up the dough - Nav companies are the ones charging Mercedes at prive levels that put COMAND upgrades at $250 - and SD Garmin at $630 - NavCo's it's their bread/butter like ink jet cartridges are for those ink jet printer manuf
