I would only let it fuel up as much as the nozzle would dictate. Once the fumes shut off the pump, I would not put anymore.
I never had a bad fuel smell, but I would occasionally get a weird fuel-like smell for several mornings after a full tank.
The whole concern for me was that I took my car to the dealer to see if any work could be done, and I ended up having to pay haha.
I went to Park Avenue Motors in Palo Alto. I really like that dealer, I have been there before, but I was kind of bummed out that I had to basically pay $ 95 just to have them rip the back seat off and tell me that there was nothing they could fix.

Follow up on repair
Schumacher MB called and they did fix it under the extended - He said they probably will not be covering diesels in the future. Something about my letter showing it was covered and it at first showed up as covered in there system. Apparently a follow up was sent out the other day now saying it was determined diesel is not covered but since mine was leaking just as the problem in described and the fact I had the letter saying it was and I had verified it with MBUSA they were bound to covering it. I have to thank this forum for all the follow up and information that has been posted.

This involves all W211 E Class cars as they have all had problems with leaking fuel sending units and tanks. The National Highway Transportation Safety Authority has a CURRENTLY OPEN INVESTIGATION in regards to these problems and we need anyone that has not yet filed a complaint with NHTSA to do so ASAP.
Mercedes is finally being forced to answer to this problem and the NHTSA needs to know the scope of this problem. There is a good chance that a safety recall may come from this so action is needed from anyone that has not reported their failures yet.
COMPLAINTS CAN BE FILED HERE: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
Reference NHTSA Action Number: PE12001.

2006 E350
Repairs underway
I took my 2006 E350 in to the shop last Wednesday. Customer rep said she hadn't heard about the warranty extension. I handed her the printouts of the MBUSA letters that Konigstiger posted earlier in the thread, and it's being done at no charge. Will finally be able to fill my tank full without going into the garage the next morning and being greeted with the smell of gas!

MBWorld Fanatic!
Went to the dealer at MB of Littleton today with all of the provided paperwork and they never even heard of this recall being issued yet, nonetheless they made an appointment for me on Friday to take it in early morning - with the stipulation that if the repair doesn't turn out to be warranty related they will charge me a $137 diagnostics fee.
Giving this paperwork to as many W211 non-AMG owners as I know right now.

Your dealer is either an idiot or lazy. It's a nationwide campaign for warrant extention of the fuel systems in the 2003-2009 E class vehicles that everyone not living under a rock at Mercedes knows about. Have the dealer call MBUSA @ 201-573-0600 and ask for Lois at extension 4627. She can enlighten them to corporate warranty policy.

I noticed that most dealers will only perform and replace everything if you tell them that you smell gas, other than that... They will only diagnose your car to see if its necessary to fix it.
Did anyone in here take their cars to these following MB dealers yet (MB Downtown LA, Fletcher Jones Newport Beach or MB Long Beach/ Signal Hill) regarding fuel leak issue? Did they fix it under the extended warranty? My question is that how did it go? Did it cost anything out of your pocket? And also did they provide you a loaner car as well? Thanks in advance

1) Does this mean that we can take our car to a MB dealership and get all of this work done for free?
2) Will they replace all of those components (fuel tank, including the fuel filling limiter valve, the in-tank fuel filter/sender, and the in-tank fuel pump)? Or will they only replace one or more if they seem to be broken?

2003 E500 Full Replacement
Hi Guys,
I'd like to also echo the comments from other posters. I've been reading up like crazy and found some good information to help me DIY my way through a few repairs. I just wanted to let everyone know that I had this gas smell, took the car to Schumacher Mercedes Monday morning. They called after a couple hours and told me the full replacement was called for and they would be done Wed afternoon. I've been driving the 2015 C300 loaner since then and having a blast.
Thanks for posting the information Konigstiger. They were shocked when I brought the star bulletin with me and was so informed. Nothing makes things smoother than knowing what's going on before you hear what they have to say. I'll definitely post results when I get the E500 back.

Took my 2005 E Class to Mercedes of Ft. Pierce, FL. Was dropped off at 10:30 on a Thursday. All compents of the fuel system were replaced including the tank, loaner car was provided free of charge, car was expertly cleaned and I picked up at 5:30 PM that evening. Couldn't have asked for a better transaction.

This is quite normal with this part. Not every part is warehoused in different countries and are special orders only from one of 3 centralized warehouse locations in Germany.

Out Of Control!!
I was not "blaming" them. I have "been there, done that" as a product manager.
Product manager to OEM supplier: I need 1000 of those parts you sent a last time buy notice on 5 years ago.
OEM: What did you screw up the take rate?
Manager: No, we just had a recall and/or a warranty extension.
OEM: We held the tooling for an extra year but that was 4 years ago.
Manager: Oh Sh-t!

Yep, real messed up.
Got to figure the original tooling what written off over the production of hundreds of thousands of original parts, and any new tooling will have to be written off over only a few 1000 pieces.

I had it happen with chips (impossible to source after the end of life)
Plastic cell phone housing parts. (Not as bad if you can rubber mold, very expensive if you need a machined metal mold.)
I don't want to guess how many of those tanks are left from the initial production vs. how many they will need.
