URGENT: NHTSA Opens investigation into fuel leaks on the W211 E Class

Oh makes sense, alright. Dumb question I know but that clarifies it. I wish this wouldn't turn out to be a half-decade long "investigation" (which I'm sure it will be before it's settled) - I just don't know why the NHTSA/Mercedes will not recognize this problem. Other than the obvious answer of monetary considerations, I would think a company like Mercedes-Benz would want to protect their reputation above repair/replacement costs.

Another leaky W211
Hello I have a 2005 E320CDI .
I had been having issues with diesel puddles under the car. And after doing some resaerch I seen this seemed to be a wide spread issue with the W211.
So I Filled the vehicle up with fuel the other night and in the morning there was puddle of diesel under the car. I removed the back seat and inspected the Fuel sending units under the seats and found the passenger side Sending unit (is just a block off plate in this car) was soaked with diesel and a puddle was sitting around it. I checked the locking ring and it was loose by hand it appears that it was never properly tightened at the factory. Or the design is such that is loosens over time. A complaint was filed with the Transport Canada

Well they did change the status of the investigation a few weeks back so at least there will be continuing, more formal inquiry. Just be patient that's all you can do =\ none of us really know the answer for sure.

Fuel leak
Same as the rest of you!!! Sucks as this '04 E 500 is my wife's daily driver. 103+K on the car. Took the car to my local independent shop about 2 months ago to search and repair the issue. Found fuel around the sending unit under the drive side back seat. Looked like the seal was bad, replaced it. Seemed to help for several weeks then the leak was back. Filled the car on Friday, 5.31, parked in the garage Friday night and was knocked over by gas fumes on Saturday morning. Parked the car outside overnight. Just checked the sending unit again and a pool of fuel was again present. Moped up fuel to see if I could see where the unit is leaking from. It is not leaking from the ring, it is leaking from the top of the sending unit. The part where the small wire plug is attached to the sending unit. It looks like this part is "glued" to the body of the sending unit. I guess the short term fix is to only fill the tank half way. Dealing with the government, NTSB, and MB attorneys will take longer then I plan on keeping the car. I would have a hard time selling this car in good faith to someone with this issue. Glad I found the forum as I was about to spring for a new sending unit and seal......

Maybe you should have bought a FORD!
Ford Motor Co. (F) has recalled 465,000 vehicles globally in order to repair fuel leakage. 2013 Ford Fusion, Flex, Explorer, Taurus, Interceptor Sedan and Interceptor Utility, together with the 2013 Lincoln MKZ, MKS and MKT are the models recalled.
Ford will check the fuel tank leaks, which may result in fire. However, there are no accidents or injuries reported so far owing to fuel tank leakage.

But then you could have bought a Jeep. DETROIT (AP) -- A defiant Chrysler is refusing to recall about 2.7 million Jeeps the government says are at risk of a fuel tank fire in a rear-end collision.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent Chrysler a letter asking that the company voluntarily recall Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1993 through 2004 and Jeep Libertys from 2002 through 2007.
Chrysler Group LLC, which is majority-owned by Italy's Fiat SpA, said in a statement Tuesday that the Jeeps are safe and it "does not intend to recall the vehicles."

Saw that today on the news and instantly thought about this thread. Moral of the story: it's ridiculous that this is an issue and should be fixed especially with a company like Mercedes-Benz that prides itself on the best of everything... but at the end of the day we are dealing with a FOR PROFIT COMPANY and it could be worse IMO...

Well the NHTSA is taking this seriously enough that, after I filed a report, they asked for copies of my service invoices, AND, sent a courier to pick up the used, leaking fuel pump module that I saved after the last time it was replaced. They said they are going to test it. They also asked for the photos that I had of the fuel puddling on the module atop the tank. So, if you're on the fence about filing a complaint, please do so now. This is NOT dead.

Oh thank God. After a pretty extreme canyon run a few people from the car meet noted that they smelled gas from my car afterwards (I was on a full tank but have never had the issue to severely) and that worried me, I really want this recall done -_-

2002 CLK430 & 2007 E350
Had this problem on my wife's recently purchased '06 E350. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA, but replaced the filter/sending unit myself, which fixed the problem.
A couple of observations: The new unit is a slightly different design from the old. I purchase all the parts from a local MB dealer and they uncluded 2 new sealing rings along with the sending unit and new seal. Interestingly, I could not use the new rings; they were too tight to go on easily. I could have forced them on, but did not want to run the risk of damaging the tank, so I re-used the old rings.
I'm wondering if the sealing rings on some cars were incorrectly installed at the factory or when new rings are used when the filter/sending unit is replaced, thereby putting additional stress on the tank causing it to warp or crack.
Additionally, someone from the NHTSA called me to talk about the issue. He said the filter/sending unit is a maintenance item with a replacement schedule of every 65k miles. Sure enough the manual says to replace the fuel filter every 65k. Unfortunately, with this model car, the filter is part of the sending unit, so the whole assembly needs to be replaced.

May be a maintenance item every 65k miles, but i replaced my driver side unit at dealer for $900 around 58,000 and 11,000 miles later i'm getting the gas fumes again when i have a full tank of gas.
