Snorkel for GL?
I may be in the wrong forum, but are there any snorkels for the GL? There is a 1m deep river I have to ford get to my hunting cabin. I would like to affix one to my GL350 for more confidence when fording across said river. Thanks.

The GL should float in 1 M deep water! In addition, the vents on the drive train are not high enough to stay out of water that deep. Really bad things happen when water gets in the differentials and transmissions.

I've seen published figures ranging from 18" to 24" for both the G and GL.
I'd probably use the 18" as max....

i believe you can try here and see if they can get one for GL --> http://www.obbo4x4.com/products.php?fid=7
someone modified his GL450 for serious offroading.... here is the image of his GL (from sema 2010 or 2009)

600 mm with EORP level 3
512 mm with standard suspension in raised mode.

sorry to thread resurrect but just as well to peg that info here. It is not clear what the limitations to that depth is, but I don’t think it’s the air intake and a snirkel likely won’t improve it much.
Submerging a 10+yo GL in a river is a bad idea and you’re likely to short out all the expensive stuff in the bottom compartments.

On the other hand, the whole point of a snorkel is to tie all the breathers together into the snorkel. Differentials and transmissions included.
All that said, it seems like an inherently bad idea to put a 200 degree engine and transmission into 50 degree water, snorkel or not. Not to mention all the expensive electronic bits everyone else is pointing out. This is what old, cheap chevys are for.

On the one hand, I'm dumb for responding to a 10 year old post.

No, im the dummy for zombie thread resurrection, but I’m doing the research to either decide on the GL as a dry climate family over lander, and suck up the little to no aftermarket support -or- pivot to a similar vintage LR3 which has ample aftermarket support, a paper cabin air filter, better turning radius than the GL and two more inches of fording depth. The rumor is the LR3s electrics are also up over the belt line, making fording low risk.
because I know my EORP GL is going to find the sole 601 mm water hole as the single immutable obstacle between me and Home;
even in the driest desert of Eastern Washington.
that being said, I own the GL and we just need decent tires and a roof rack and off we go. Just not gonna be fording anything.

As someone who has a GL that was taken out by a leak from the washer fluid behind the left rear wheel, I would suggest this isn't a good idea.
