Giulia Quadrifoglio Delivers Less Than Advertised Horsepower
Touted as the AMG Beater, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio’s Advertised Horsepower Crumbles on the Dyno
We currently live in the midst of a horsepower war. Auto manufacturers like Mercedes and Alfa Romeo are utilizing whatever technologies are available to produce engines with ridiculous horsepower numbers. What’s even more impressive are the engines themselves. 6-cylinder, and even 4-cylinder turbocharged engines are capable of producing horsepower figures that two decades ago were reserved for V8, and even V12 engines.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is, by all means, the industry benchmark. Sure, some may consider that to be the BMW M3/M4, but we highly disagree. Powered by a 4.0-liter biturbo V8, the C63 AMG cranks out 469 horsepower. And although that should be plenty, it can be upped to 503 horsepower in the “S” trim. Outstanding figures, by all means.

That brings us to the competition, or more precisely, the newest competition from Italy. The Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio is the “AMG” of the Giulia model lineup. It promises to compete, and even beat the Germans at their own horsepower game. Well, according this AutoAvanti video, that may not be entirely true.
Officially, the Quadrifoglio is said to squeeze 505 horsepower out of its 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6. But this dyno run seems to have only measured 392 ponies. Now, it’s normal protocol to calculate a 15% flywheel power loss, but this figure seems to account for much more than that. Either Alfa over-hyped their new sedan, or the type of dyno utilized isn’t delivering the right stats.
Thinking about it further, there might be a third option. Perhaps the Alfa is already broken. After all, it’s Italian!
