AMG GT R Can Still Get The 911 GT3 RS To Sweat

Apples to apples, the AMG GT R gives the 992 GT3 RS a solid run for its money.
Motorsport rivalries are tough to create when you’ve pulled out of motorsport. After the tragic Le Mans crash of 1955, that’s exactly what Mercedes did. For a while, there was no Porsche vs Mercedes battles to be had. BMW picked up that war front. It really wasn’t till the Group C era where Mercedes finally brought some fight to Porsche.
Fast forward to the 2020’s and GT racing has taken the forefront. Manufacturers love that they can race what they sell. Porsche’s top player is the 992 GT3 RS. Built on the foundation of incredible pedigree, it’s their ultimate track weapon.

AMG’s main player is the AMG GT R. Not nearly the the same kind of pedigree as the 911. But this car is backed by the relentless juggernaut that is AMG – well, at least with their Formula 1 program. This car has something to prove.
As far as speed contests go, a drag race is the simplest, most pure demonstration of speed. How quickly can you get to that point over there, 1,320 feet away. While simple, it is also deceptively complicated. And you can’t get two different styles of car with the GT3 RS and the AMG GT R.
Natural aspiration in the Porsche means high horsepower per liter. But it does so at the sacrifice of torque. The AMG GT R has turbochargers helping add gobs of torque to its V8 engine… at the sacrifice of rear tires.
The combination of high power, acceptable torque and the balance of a rear engine helps the Porsche. Off the line, the Mercedes just can’t put power down as effectively. The AMG eventually reels in the Porsche at the fast end of the course, but only just. It’s a game of who has the best launch.
Turns out if you decide to control the AMG’s shifting of gears, you’ll have the upper hand. Maybe it’s an incentive to be more “at one” with the car, but from a roll and from a dig, the tables turn and the AMG is definitively faster. How’s that Pedigree looking now, Porsche?
