The 8 Mods You Should Do First

So you finally made the leap and purchased a sweet Mercedes-Benz. And if you’re like most car guys, you’re already starting to think about what mods to do. Thankfully, Car Throttle has put together the great video below highlighting the eight mods you should do before anything else.

Here’s a brief rundown:

1. Give It a Service

Before you do anything to your car, check to make sure everything is running in top shape. This means changing the fluids and checking your brakes, lines, and suspension. You should know your car inside and out to ensure you can mod it without any trouble.

2. Look at Your Wheels and Tires

You’ll enjoy an immediate change in performance with a new wheel and tire setup. Your old tires may have been cheap and long-lasting, but new softer-compound tires provide better grip through corners, from the starting line, and while decelerating. Wider wheels will further enhance grip and improve 0-60 times.

3. Reduce Weight

This mod doesn’t cost you anything. All it involves is a little grunt work — stripping your car of the weight it doesn’t need. This includes carpets, heavy seats, and even the entire rear seat. While you might pay the price in comfort, you’ll be happier that your car has better power-to-weight.

4. Upgrade Your Suspension

If you have old shocks and springs, your car won’t handle corners effectively, it won’t ride as smoothly, and its acceleration and deceleration will be affected. Throw a coil-over suspension system in there, and your ride will look and drive differently. The center of gravity will be lower, and it’ll turn corners like a pro.

5. Beef Up the Brakes

With all the extra speed you’ve gained, you’ll want to make sure your car can stop just as effectively. This is a simple mod, as you can put beefier brake pads on the discs you already have. You can also get a set of braided brake lines, which don’t bulge as much as standard lines under pressure.

6. Fit a Limited Slip Differential

Before you get to serious engine work, replace your car’s open differential with a Limited Slip Differential. It will increase traction and improve cornering, and as an added bonus, it’s pretty much bulletproof.

7. Fix Up the Interior

Now it’s time to improve the inside of your car. A smaller steering wheel made of better materials will enhance your driving experience. Bucket seats will support your body during hard corners. You can also take this a step farther and focus on the appearance. Many guys get the windows tinted immediately, which adds to the look and helps with the sun as well. Just make sure you follow the guidelines for your state so you don’t get pulled over.

8. Increase Power and Torque

How much money do you have? Do you like getting dirty when working on your car? These will be the deciding factors of whether or not you should choose a forced induction ITP or a simple tune up. Whatever you choose, your ride should be able to handle it with ease.
