How-To Tuesday: Professional Quality Rim Painting at Home

One problem with machined aluminum rims is that they can lose their luster and oxidize rather quickly. If your rims are suffering from the abuse of mother nature, you can still revive them, and upgrade their looks too. There are a few options out there, including getting them re-machined, or even powder-coated, but you can also save some cash and re-paint them right from home.

As you can see in the video below, getting a quality finish is pretty easy, even if you don’t have any experience. The quality of new paints is higher than ever before. Not only will you bring new life to your rim, but you can also change the looks as well. If you have always loved the looks of the dark grey finish of the rims on AMG cars, you can now easily replicate that.

As with any project that involves paint, surface prep is critical to how the final product looks. In this instance, this machined aluminum rim has been completely sanded down, removing all of the old clearcoat. You’ll have to take some time with applying thin, even coats, but soon you’ll have new looking rims. How much does it cost? Only a little bit of your time, and the cost of paint.
