Drag Race: AMG C63 Black Edition vs BMW M5

When it was released in 2012, the C63 AMG was among the fastest cars available in its class, offering an impressive blend of performance and luxury. The Black Edition made performance a priority, making the base C63 look mild by comparison.

Powered by a normally aspirated 510-hp V8, the C63 AMG Black Edition is capable of reaching 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, and can run the standing quarter mile in twelve seconds flat. Those are still impressive statistics four years later.

It’s even more impressive when you consider the following: if you move a class up, and jump the fence over to the BMW side, the F10-chassis M5, with fifty more horsepower and a pair of turbochargers, put up those same acceleration numbers.

However, numbers on a page don’t always tell the whole story, as you can see in the video below.

Starting from a 30 MPH roll, both cars start dead even, but the M5 begins to pull away very quickly, leaving a gap that grows wider with each passing second. The turbocharged BMW definitely seems to have the advantage in the upper RPM range.

It would have been interesting to see the results of the same race repeated, with the C63 swapped for an E63. Hey, M5! Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?
